Here in the Phoenix area, pretty much every home that doesn't have natural gas service use heat pumps. However, since the Flagstaff area and northern AZ get much colder in the winter than PHX, heat pumps won't work very well up there.

I wonder, what do homes without natural gas service use for heating up in northern AZ? Are oil furnaces or boilers used? Propane furnaces? Or electric furnaces or baseboard heating? I looked through Google and couldn't find much info.

If you have natural gas available (and it's good if you do, 'cause then you're cooking with gas) then it's probably the best choice for heating. Natural gas prices are not likely to go up, going down in more likely.

City utilities of Wood. My Mom used both about 10 miles south of Flag.

I see propane tanks commonly near cities and towns. Wood makes sense where it is available. In remote areas wind and solar setups become more frequent.

In and around flagstaff, natural gas is the norm. But I've seen a lot of propane, and a lot of baseboard heating. I've also seen wood stoves in some of the oldest homes.

I don't think I've ever seen heating oil, though.

Of course it is common in areas with natural gas service, however, I am specifically asking about in areas without natural gas service, and it seems (based on the other answers in this thread) that wood and propane heating are the most common in those areas.
