We have a 11 year old and would like some first hand information and experience from parents who have sent their children to public or charter schools. Also, is the town really economically depressed or is it just certain sections of the town and as such is the crime rate high as compared to San Diego or Phoenix, particularly sex crimes? While I am on the subject of Flagstaff, how is the weather like during summer and winter? Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I would suggest you start by listening to the podcast "Poverty With A View", which was produced the the local NPR affiliate in Flagstaff; KNAU. Lots of reality checks about life in Flag. Here's a link:

"Poverty with a View" Podcast : NPR Podcasts

Summers are nice (albeit short) if you don't like it very warm and don't mind daily thunderstorms starting in July. Winters can be mild with little snow in town or there may be more than a hundred inches. Either way, it gets VERY cold. Not Minnesota cold, but below zero nights are the norm in the heart of winter.
Flagstaff is no longer a lumber and railhead town. It's now a university and tourist town. Prices on almost everything reflect that.

In Flagstaff, the only white collar jobs are with the government (NAU, county, city, feds) or with Gore. Beyond that, not much else up here aside from minimum wage retail jobs. It's a great place to live/work if you're fortunate to be with one of the aforementioned sectors, but it's difficult to find gainful employment.
