Howdy. I will be in Sedona the second week in September for a week. I want to head to Ruidoso, NM from Sedona (on my way back to Texas). I want to make Ruidoso in one day, but it can be a long, unhurried day The map makes it look difficult to head generally eastward out of Sedona. How is the road, 260, from Camp Verde to Payson? And then 260/60 on over to near the NM state line? I'd rather stay off the Interstate and see some country ... but I'll be in a Camry Hybrid, not a Jeep!

Thanks for any input ...

if you want to stay off the interstates, that might be the way to go....

260 east from Camp Verde is a fine two-lane (one in each direction) paved state highway...you'll gently climb the Rim, then sharply drop again into Payson, then climb again a ways east of Payson....there may be some construction in sections and there may be a notorious speed trap in Star Valley four miles east of Payson.....remember to turn left at the main light in Payson and turn left in Show Low onto 60 from 260....

this will be a long day, so drive carefully and take stretch breaks every couple hours.....

What he said^^^^. 260 is a fine road, kind of twisty in a few short sections, you are not going to go fast. Very scenic. A good choice if you are trying to avoid the Interstate. Lots of vehicles use this road including trucks pulling campers so your camry will be fine.

You will go past Pietown (where, oddly enough, the pies are not that great) and the Very Large Array (you will know it when you see it).

I don't know, the pies in Pie Town I had are actually quite good...

It's a gorgeous drive and puts you in John Wayne Territory as well as through Socorro, which was where the first Hilton Hotel was operated.

Conrad Hilton was originally from San Antonio, NM, near Socorro....the bar from an early Hilton hotel (so the story goes) is in the Owl Cafe in San Antonio, a very casual burger joint worth a stop for a simple green chili burger....

now back to the Flagstaff forum!
