Hello,

I am planning to rent a car and travel from Kingman to Kayenta in late December followed by Monument Valley the next day. I know that occasionally I-40 through Flagstaff can be closed due to heavy snow but when it is open and passable in winter, does that generally mean 89 to 160 is generally open and passable as well?

I haven't been in that area in the winter but I am acquainted with the general Flagstaff area and lower elevations nearby.

Flagstaff is near a high point on I40 so it tends to get the most snow. Monument valley and Kayenta are appreciably lower in elevation. At their elevation there is usually significantly less snow and it melts much more quickly.

On the other hand, you are talking about 2 lane roads, not as heavily traveled as I40.

No major problems. ADOT does a great job of clearing the highway if there is a snow storm. Drive during the day, if possible.
Be prepared: warm clothing: jacket, gloves, hat, flashlight. etc. If you can, rent an AWD vehicle.
Monument Valley is awesome! Can get cold (with winds) but snow on the reservation & roads is usually not a huge factor to consider.
Hope you have a terrific trip!

Okay. Cool. It's good to know that the elevation drops and that I shouldn't have too much difficulty once I leave I-40 as there aren't too many routes you can go to get up there.

I'll definitely keep those supplies in mind for when the time comes to pack. I'm not sure if I'll be able to rent an AWD car but I plan to leave Kingman in the morning so I'm good to go when it comes to driving during the day, at least. I hear Monument Valley is pretty amazing so I'm definitely looking forward to going.

Thanks for the responses!
