I'm curious to know if the Flagstaff area gets a decent amount of forest fires or not?
When's the last time you guys had a major fire threat?

I don't think that Flagstaff has actually been badly threatened by any wildfires. There was the Radio fire in 1977 that burned Mt Elden NE of Flag. The Hardy fire in 2010 caused an evacuation of a small portion NE of Flag for a short while. This year there were some evacuations in Winona which is east of Flag.

Isn't there one going on near Sedona right now? Fire near Flagstaff would be such a tragedy.

Yeah there was a lot of smoke in the air Thursday. I think there might have been two fires but not sure. I could see some flames on a mountain close to the 180 driving out of Flagstaff Thursday night.

I think anywhere where there is a lot of fire fuel you have to be a little cautious about. Lightning strikes often cause small fires in all of Northern AZ, sometimes they get big. Flagstaff looks pretty green (good) but I think fire is still a threat. I know there is a lot of forest management that goes on in the area, that probably abates the threat somewhat.

I found a good article on Arizona wildfires here:

Wildfires have burned 75,000 acres in Arizona, but experts had predicted more
https://cronkitenews.azpbs.org/2018/...ona-wildfires/

98% of the fires are human caused.

They have had some bad floods there. The bad drivers are more of a threat.

When you live on the edge of a forest, fire are never far from you mind.

Many of us don't obsess on the idea, but realize, it is truly a possibility.

Um...2 weekends ago. I visited a friend at Flagstaff Hospital and saw smoke coming from Sedona...two days later, all of northeastern AZ and northwestern NM covered in smoke. It was ugly.

Each time I visit the area, I notice how the cute ponderosa pine trees keep getting drier and drier, turning red and all. Also, the grass looks extremely dry. I was like yikes! When I lived in Flagstaff in the early 90's, it used to rain every day, and San Francisco Peaks had a snowcap year round. Now, without the snowcap, the mountain looks naked.

I've driven through Flagstaff several times on road trips, and the last time I passed through was three years ago, and it seemed to me that there were a lot more dead trees that I could see from the freeway. I suppose there's always been dead trees, but it did make me wonder about forest fires.

Those are probably bark beetle kills.
