One Florida statute, for example, prohibits employers from charging for use of a toilet. An employer that violates that statute is guilty of a misdemeanor in the second degree.

Hahahahahahahahahah!!!!!

Where I used to work I got paid for my half hour lunch time if I ate in the lunchroom. We were considered to be on call and if an emergency arose we were required to report back to work. That happened many times. We would simply go back to eating later and use up the remaining time of the half hour.

It shows how BAD Florida labor laws are. Did you know companies can create ANY policy they see fit (and put them on the "Company Policy Manual" and make it "readily avilable" to employees), no matter how crazy the policy may be, as long as it doesn't violate FL or Federal labor laws??

For example: a company can create a policy that an employee getting to work late once can be immediatelly terminated after a supervisor reviewing the circumstances of the tardiness. That has power of law in Florida, a slong as it doesn't violate State or Federal laws. So a company could not create a policy of "not hiring divorced women" as that violates a Federal law.

Hey, do you know who basically crafted this looney law of allowing companies to create their "Policy Manuals" taht have power of law? Disney, of course. That way they can run their ship with minimal worries of getting sued or having the gov't come after them.

No wonder working in FL sucks!

Such provisions absolutely DO NOT have the force of law. They are contractual terms -- you can either agree to them, or find some other place to work.

As for the idea what "well they can do anything as long as it doesn't violate the law" -- well no kidding. Isn't that what being a private business is about?

Hello?

When companies treat employees badly they get even. Either by theft, laziness or bad attitude, it happens. No wonder "service" is often percieved as bad.

Well, I had decided to get a jump start on things and do a bit of internet and phone search for general employment in Fla. If you ever want to feel like you're less then dirt, go ahead and try that. I got tired of hearing about what I can "offer" the employer and how they'd consider offering me full time employment in a year OR SO if I could "prove" myself to them. Guess for their 6.75 an hour for 15 hrs per week with no chance of any health insurance for three months to a year and the arrogant attitudes, I'll pass. Florida is just not a "worker friendly" state.

I agree, there are some horrible rules about working here.

I lived in Mass for awhile and they had some pretty good rules.

I would never take a salaried position here in Florida, there is no limit to the time they can ask you to put in over 40 hours...

I can't remember if it was Mass or Texas but in one of those states if they asked you to work over 45 hours, they had to pay you additional money.

We can thank the Republicans for the state of employment laws here in Florida.

Lisa, not necessarily. My state is also a Republican state and we are also a right to work state. There are very few unions here. But it is honestly like a whole other world as far as employment is concerned.
