At one time, there were plans for the Cross Florida Barge Canal, but the project was eventually cancelled for environmental reasons:

The wikipedia one was this basically:
America's Great Loop Cruisers' Association

It's a route that goes up the east coast of the U.S. through the Great Lakes down the Mississippi and some tributaries and back out into the Gulf of Mexico and back into Florida.

I came thisclose to being crew for this trip.

It was probably best that it was cancelled, a Canal that wide would have created too large a barrier for wildlife to cross.

It would have made the trip to the Gulf easier though, shame they couldn't have tunnelled some of it!
