If you look at all of the south with the exception of Atlanta, and New Orleans (debatable,) there is really not much prosperity, and considering those same type of people are who reside in the Jacksonville area it shouldn't really be a surprise that Jacksonville is as far behind as it is.
Northern Virginia, the Research Triangle (Raleigh-Durham), Charlotte and Nashville would like a word.

If one is gonna say New Orleans with a metro population of 1.5 million and growth rate of 6.8% is prosperous, then yes, you should include Nashville with a metro population of 2 million and a growth rate of 16.94% as being prosperous as well.

Actually, Georgia sucks. That's why the St. John's River flows north

Seriously though...Jacksonville, not a Floridian city?

Jax might be a bit like how Miami was before the 1960s. Miami was a probably lot nicer.

Why would Jacksonville want to be like Miami?

Consider the sheer extent of landmass that comprises the combined area of the contiguous US, Canada, and Alaska. Then realize that Miami and South Florida, along with lower and coastal California, represent just two tiny slivers of land that actually manage to achieve a tranquil climate long-term. That's right, every single other piece of land in this huge territory, either gets ravaged by one too many winter freezes, or is too dry and continental in climate, or a combination of those factors.

That is what demonstrates how unlucky the US is compared to other large countries. You had great empires, civilizations, etc able to last long-term in China, India, etc because those places all have reliable equability in their climate regimes. Meanwhile, no such complex civilization was present in North America until you went below the Rio Grande and encountered the Mayas, Aztecs, etc. That is the plight of Jacksonville, along with other Southern US cities like Houston and New Orleans, dealing with the pain that comes from the inhospitable climate of North America - perhaps the greatest on Earth outside of Antarctica.

Relevant information below:
  • 1. Twitter thread discussion about cold snaps in the Southern US:

  • 2. Description of the Southern US climate regarding cultivation:

    Quote:
    6.12. Inhospitable Environment for Plants

The southern United States is an inhospitable environment for the growing of exotic forest trees. The area has been compared with that of Siberia, without its severity, for its great fluctuations in winter temperature. This phenomenon prohibits the successful establishment of forest trees from most other parts of the world where the mean winter temperature can be even lower than that in the southern United States. The temperatures in those areas, however, decline steadily from summer highs to winter lows in the absence of fluctuating warm and cold temperatures. That is why seed sources of thriving plantations of Eucalyptus spp. from other areas of the world, such as E. dunnii from southern Brazil, E. deanii from France, and E. viminalis from Georgia (formerly the Soviet Union), failed when introduced to the United States.

Looks like it’s half of the peninsula, which sounds about right when observing climates throughout the year.

I feel that Jacksonville could really benefit from a major international airport, something that both Atlanta and Miami have. It would really bring tremendous growth to the city, and that is one of the major reasons for Atlanta's enormous growth.

Perhaps Jacksonville could be used as a gateway to Africa since Miami's the gateway to Latin America. The major problem is that there is not enough land for a massive international airport.

There were talks of bringing Brightline trains up to Jacksonville from Orlando and Miami alongside the potential for high speed rail from Atlanta. I'm sure that would also have a positive effect.

In addition, for those that care, ocean temps drop quickly during the winter north of Cape Canaveral. We have winter days when the surf temp in Cocoa Beach is 10 degrees warmer than Daytona Beach just 70 miles or so north.
