***MOD CUT*** I Had the pleasure to have played with the legendary Joe Cocker in 1971 Live at The Flying Machine which was televised. If there is anyone who can direct me to the archives of this taping I would be deeply grateful.

Okay, hope I'm not duplicating any lists, but here goes:

Most people are naming restaurants. Maybe because I've worked at some of these retail stores, I thought of them right away. Some were local businesses, some were national chains.

Rhodes Furniture - 2 stores - Fort Myers & Naples
Spectrum Furnishings - Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral, Sarasota
Brown's Interiors - Naples
Circuit City - everywhere! Locally, Fort Myers & Naples
Home Depot Expo Design Center - Naples
Linens and Things - Naples & Fort Myers
Hendrick's Jewelers - Bonita Springs (did it finally close? started liquidation sales in 2007, but I think it finally closed in 2009)

Fort Myers Beach Theater
Regal Cinema - Bonita Springs

Joey's Pizza & Pasta - Naples
The Keg - Naples
Kona Grill - Naples
Sam Snead's - Fort Myers
Shell's Seafood Restaurant - Fort Myers
Frascati's Italian Restaurant - Naples
Uno Chicago Grill - Naples
Marie-Michelle's on Venetian Bay - Naples
Harold's on the Bay - Fort Myers

So many of the places already mentioned sure do bring back memories. i can remember a corner in Largo that had Kmart, then Zayre's across the street and a Cooks opened across the street. Cooks had brand new plastic shopping carts.

No one mentioned McCrorys.....a dime store in Clearwater
Ponderosa Steak House......still one left in St. Petersburg
Mr C's..........was a pioneer in bag your own groceries, much like Save a Lot
S & H green stamp stores

..snipped..
S & H green stamp stores
yellow stamps from Winn Dixie.
I had a conversation about the HOme Depots Expo design centers today.
My mother and I bought quilting material from McCrorys.
And, wasnt there a W.W. Kress ?
We still have one KMart here in Winter Haven. It's a haul and I have to pass 4 WM's but I shop there occasionally.
I loved Woolworths lunch counter and Walgreen's. Decent fry food and sandwiches at a reasonable price and great soda's.
Eckerd Drugs.

There was F.W. Woolworth, S.H. Kress, and S.S. Kresge; the latter morphed into Kmart. Kress died in 1980 and Woolworth finally kicked in in 1997 after being on life support for years.

I have been thinking and,

I've got some More!!
Barbecue Bens Steak House
Eagle Army Navy Store
Toyland
SuperX Drug Store
Fountains Department Store
Kings Department Store
Benjamin Franklin Five & Dime
Murphy's Five & Dime
Quik Chek (Winn Dixie Quik Chek)
Peter Pan Souvenirs
Jamie's Buttermilk Chicken
Phil's Auto Stores
Woolworths
Burger Chef
BBF (Bordan's Better Foods) Hamburger Stands
S & H Greenstamps Store
Sambo's restraunts
Ben's Steak House
John and Mary's Resturant
The Gipper Bar (Delray Beach)
Dante's Den Bar (Briny Breezes)
Dee's Pool Hall (Hypoluxo)
Sky Pilot Bar (Lake Worth)
Jordan Marsh Department Store
Grand Union Food Stores
Eckerd's Drugs
I'm still thinking,
but in Palm Beach County, when I was growing up through the 60's, we had so many here today, gone in ten years places. Teens even had "Music Casters"
a club out on Southern Blvd. that specifically catered to those under 21 as a dance club with ID cards. They even had paddle boats and canoes, and were only open on weekend evenings. Drinks were non=alcolholic and had catchy titles like Green Lizards, and alot of others I can not recall.
Unfortunatly places like this are pretty much non-existant. That club was $3.00 - $6.00 admission, depending if you had a card, or if you were a guest, (and was even then affordable to get in for kids.)
There is really not a lot out there for kids anymore and that is half the reason we see so many of our young people out on the street at night getting into trouble. There's nothing to do today that doesn't cost a fortune in one form or another, anything either costs upfront to get in, or you pay to participate,
or you must join.
Even the Civic Centers back then (which were all over, and accessable) provided free, pool tables, ping pong , all kinds of games in doors and out, for all the kids, and it was all free!!!! You had access to everything,
Need we ask why our society has changed????? Because we have chosen to put a price on everything, and made being a child more, or should I say too commercialized. Our chidren are now only entertained by staying indoors infront of a TV playing videos, because we have made anything else too costly to do. There is no such thing as free entertainment, someone is picking up the tab in some form or another.
Americans are far from Free anymore, Free is not truely Free,
Now a days for ANYONE TO EARN FREE, You have to BUY ONE FIRST
