I have pretty much been given a classic car from my family. It just arrived from Alaska. It has an Alaska Title and is Registered in Alaska under my Mom's name. Obviously I need to register it in Florida and need to put Florida Insurance on it. Can I register the vehicle in my name with it having my Mom's name on the current title and registration? My name is on neither document. It's still "her" car so she does not want to do a Bill of Sale so I can put the Title in my name.

I'm no expert, but I don't think so. Can't you register in your Mom's name?

She is not a resident here. And then if I register it in her name... I probably can't insure it, because I have no insurable interest in the car.

Looks like she might need to sign over the title. This could be fun....

My old car that I was paying off was registered in my name and the insurance in my name but the title was in my dads name. So I'm assuming you can but then again it was a florida title

Wondering if I can just leave it registered in Alaska, since that is where the owner lives and insure it with Florida insurance.

Maybe a call to the DMV is in order since this is an oddball situation?

You're suppose to get Fl. tags within 10 days (or something like that) of accepting a job or enrolling a child. Don't know how heavily it's enforced, though.

You have a few options..

You can get a form from the State of Florida that you can fax to your mother, it's basically a "power of attorney" form for you to register the car for her, in her name, in Florida. If that's not an option, you'll have to have her sign off on the title. She won't have to say she sold it to you for money, she can claim the car was a "gift" which will exempt you from a large percentage of the taxes.

Long term leased vehicles aren't owned....would the process for them be the same or similar?
But,obviously, DMV would answer the question better than any of us have

Florida DMV website has a Power Of Attorney form that you can print out and use to register for a tag.
