My wife and I are wanting to relocate to South Florida in the near future (in May),and as my wife really wants to live there. I want to make her happy. She is Dominican with friends and family in the Florida region. It is also closer to family in the Dominican Republic, closer than where we live now (Santa Rosa CA.) My concern is all of the areas I hear about that are so bad to live in crime wise. I have visited Boca Raton and Cape Coral, and found them both pleasant. Since my wife speaks mostly spanish, and is a teacher, she wants to live between Fort Lauderdale and south Miami.

Can someone please tell me the areas that would be safe for us to live in this region. I am becoming very negative listening to everyone talking about all of the crime in Florida. We are both working people and looking for an apartment or small house in an area where she, and I, will feel safe. She is going first to look for a teaching position and find a temporary place to live. I will be coming out shortly after that.

I would really appreciate any feedback you can give me. I am getting a bit nervous regarding this move. The weather is no problem. Have you ever been to the Dominican Republic during the summer? We are used to it.

I'm confused. You don't want to hear anything negative? Do you want people to be realistic in their responses, or do you want nothing but sunshine, lollipops, and rainbows? Because every place has negatives. South Florida just has more negatives than most other parts of the state.

Would you like it if everyone told you that it was a paradise, a modern day Garden of Eden? If you go in with those kind of expectations, you will only be disappointed.

Well, the weather isn't the only thing some people find negative about South FL. Parts of it are expensive, jobs may be hard to find and have low wages, people can be rude or bad drivers, crime. There's more negative things in people's opinion than the weather of South FL (which I love, being from Honolulu originally). You need to consider both negatives and positives so that you acn weigh them both and decide. It's better to read about the negatives, than to hear nothing but great things about South FL, only to move there and be disappointed.

I absolutely loved living in Boca Raton. It's very safe and beautiful as you probably experienced. If you want to live in Miami, I would look around Coral Gables. It's an upper scale area with relatively low crime. If it is out of your price range, I would look around Fort Lauderdale. There are some nice and safe areas around there. Don't worry about the crime unless you can only afford to live in the ghetto.

Since negativity is your topic sentence and main focus, it looks like we'll have to address that issue first.

When you imply 'everyone is always negative about Florida'. Are you like most people, than when you view a new forum of a new area, you automatically click open all the negative thread titles? If so, you'll feel that every area in every city all across all America, are ALL negative, because that's what you're focusing on.

Instead, look for positive thread titles, and click those instead. You'll have a completely different viewpoint of the areas if you do that.
