Memories of a great childhood! 1957-1959

Pine Castle and then McCoy AFB was my playground (age 11-13).

We lived 1/4 mile from the base - the last house on Warren Rd. and directly under the final approach!
It was very exciting for a kid, but I'm sure it made my mom crazy! Roof gravel would fly many times!

My family was not military, but my mom dragged me to church on the base every Sunday. Eventually, the airmen manning the gatehouse knew me on sight. I would ride my bike there regularly to use the 'huge' swimming pool (with the highest high-dive I have still ever seen), gymnasium and playground. I was waved through the gate and greeted with a "Have fun Mike" from whomever was on duty.

After whatever excitement I could muster, the canteen was always the final stop.

I would like to give a final "Thanks" with deep appreciation to all the airmen that bought this scrawny kid fries and a coke!

If I remember right, Pinecastle was changed to McCoy after McCoy was killed doing an over the shoulder bomb toss in a B-47 and had a structural failure.

My dad was stationed at McCoy Air Force Base straight out of Viet Nam. That is what caused us to relocate down here from Michigan in 1969. He was at Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan.
I was 11 at the time and he worked for the Strategic Air Command (SAC).
Later around 1972-73 we lived on Hoffner Road, directly under the flight path and we were standing in the front yard when the B52 flew over and crashed seconds later. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I remember a lot of things about that base from back then. I was actually in the civil air patrol for a short time. I remember the U2 spy planes landing and taking off and the sonic booms from the jets.

I lived in McCoy Annex housing for a year when I was 14 back in 1977. We used to hang out at the gym and rec center. Great times.
