I've lived in Sarasota two years and I've never used my heat here.

I use my heat every winter. I'm in Souhern Pinellas. My central AC gets a workout in winter. At night ill have the heat on and during the day, if its nice, I'll turn he AC on. I would prefer to live somewhere that I would NEVER need heat again!
If I ever go on a mass shooting spree, it will be during a cold spell!

I would say u need it even in miami. back during that record breaking cold 2010 winter 2 elderly men were frozen to death inside there unheated apartment. even if you not elderly I found myself using our heater for at least 20 nights that winter. we had it set a 68 and it would still common quite often that year. now granted you don't need it every winter(like last winter never had to turn it on) but most winters you'll need for 3 or 4 nights.

We're in South Daytona, and our heat pump struggles w/ the cold nights some of the winter. But then we're wimps when it comes to cold. It's not that big a deal though, we love Florida winters. It's the summers that are brutal. They seem to go on forever, but I would never want to move to a cold weather climate again to escape that. Hawaii was the only state where I never worried about cold. I never lived anyplace that had heat or A/C, and most older homes had no insulation. The plantation type homes were built w/ single wall construction! When we moved away I suddenly realized that I owned no long pants, socks, or shoes. Sandals all the way, all the time. It's probably similar in The Keys, but since we couldn't afford Hawaii anymore, The Keys would have been more of the same.

We are in the farthest Northeast corner of Florida..if you go by the link below you would think it never gets below freezing here..........we have had many winters in our 24 years here where we have had a feeze here at the beach. I have had Decembers where it was 80 on Christmas and Decembers where we have had over half the month in the 30's. It still beats the winters up North though, but yes you do need heat a few weeks in the winter to take the chill off.

Lived in Miami since 78 and I do recall a few years it being super cold ( well at least to me) I was fortunate enough to have a fireplace that we actually used quite a bit on the cold years.

We moved to a new house this spring and will surely miss the fireplace since we hate the AC heating smell. So even in Miami you will need heat for comfort a few nights a year on mild winters and for about 20 days or more on a very cold year.

Although it was very warm last year, 2012,2013 & 2014 are suppose to be very cold and it might be if the jet stream dips further south this year.

I live in St. Augustine so it's pretty far north. Rarely need heat on, but on rare occasions we do get frost. The cold snaps are very brief however.

As far as county building code requirements for new homes to have heat. I am pretty sure Charlotte county on the Gulf coast doesn't require heat for new homes. But the counties north of Charlotte county require it. Punta Gorda is in Charlotte county. It's south of Sarasota and north of Ft Myers

You're definitely unusual in that respect. When the temperature goes below 45 I would say most would utilize their heating system.
