I don't want your post to get lost in the shuffle, so I will start out, although I am rather vague, not being a surfer!

February will be pretty cold, especially if you are not use to it. Try for the end of the month, if you can.

All beaches should be open, unless there are issues with sharks, red tide, etc. However, at that time of year, it is not too common.

You want to stay on the east coast, since the Atlantic has the waves.

Surfing is restricted at most beaches. Heck, they won't even let you throw a football or frisbee most of the time.

Really? I didn't know that. I thought Ron Jon promoted Florida surfing. Are you sure?

You can usually only surf in designated areas if at all, surfers and swimmers don't mix. It is terrible at best anyway, there is no real surf in Florida that any hardcore surfers would be interested in.

These guys who posted above have no idea what they're talking about. Beaches here don't close during the "winter". And surfing is only restricted around certain piers. You usually have to keep a certain distance away from piers and some you can't surf at all or the beach patrol will whistle you in and give you a fine. You'll need a 3/2 suit during the winter and thats when the waves are the best. No booties, hood, gloves etc. There is no "designated surfing areas" or blackball areas. There is real surf here too and there are plenty of "hardcore surfers". It can be inconsistent and fickle with offshores but we do get good waves from time to time. During the winter there is usually always "something" to ride. FL is not the place to make a strictly surf trip though if you're from somewhere else. And ron jons does not serve the real surfers and is not considered a core shop. Its mainly a tourist trap selling overpriced garbage.

Oh and I was talking mainly about the east coast. The Gulf is even more inconsistent and is usually flat but they do get quality waves from time to time.
This was from brevard county a week ago. The last decent swell we got.

So where do all these hardcore surfers surf? You could go six months without any surf here. Hard to be a surfer with no surf.
