We have all seen the news reports about the man swallowed up in his bedroom, and the sinkhole eating the condominium project outside Orlando.

But, in Bowling Green, KY, a sinkhole opened up underneath the National Corvette Museum, eating the center out of a main show area and several cars as well. Happened overnight, so no one was injured. But the owners of the Corvettes who were loaning the cars are crying today.

Wow! This will not get a lot of attention because it's not in FL. Had it been in FL, now you'd be reading through 10 pages of garbage.. sorry negative sentiments..

Actually, this has gotten quite a lot of attention in the national press - CNN livestreamed the recovery of the first car, the Blue Devil, this afternoon, evidently. I was watching the National Corvette Museum's own site's streaming video instead.

Two cars were removed today, the Blue Devil and Ruby Red, and a third car is scheduled to come out tomorrow but its retrieval is likely to be more complicated, as a huge slab of concrete is more or less holding it in place now. Check out the museum's website or Facebook page for excellent coverage, photos, commentary, and videos. The damaged cars will be on display in the museum for a while before they are taken off to GM for restoration.

I visited the museum just last Thursday and got to see the hole from a safe distance. Kudos to the museum for its transparency in covering this story - talk about making lemonade from lemons!

It is not only a west central FL problem either in state. Sinkholes can happen anywhere..

Hit and Run driver dislodges fire hydrant

By Mike Clary and Joe Cavaretta, Sun Sentinel
7:59 p.m. EST, February 24, 2014

LAUDERHILL —
The woman who authorities say ran over a pedestrian with her truck and then struck a fire hydrant on Monday leading to injuries and sinkhole that swallowed a car has been ordered to remain in jail without bond.
Ivanka Cancic appeared in bond court Tuesday morning, where Judge John “Jay” Hurley reviewed her near-30-year history or drug and driving violations.

He ordered a total of $170,000 bonds on 10 criminal charges and then revoked her bond on an earlier charge to make sure she would get out of jail soon.

“The court believes you represent a very, very significant danger to the community,” said Hurley. “You have no driver’s license but you continue to drive. It appears you’re going to drive no matter what.”

When Cancic ran over a 68-year-old woman out for a walk with her church group, police said that was just the start of the Monday morning mayhem.

After hitting pedestrian Betty Greene, authorities said Cancic, 50, sped off in a white Chevrolet truck and knocked over a fire hydrant, unleashing a flood of water that in turn led to a sinkhole-like ground collapse, according to Broward Sheriff's deputies.

Reading from the Sheriff's Office arrest report, Hurley said that officers found Cancic slumped over the wheel of the truck, her head on the steering wheel. Inside the vehicle they spotted a near-empty pint bottle of Jose Cuervo tequila.

Deputies said she asked them, “What happened?”

That sinkhole that resulted after water spewed from the fire hydrant and weakened the parking lot material all but swallowed Diane Duchesne's car.

"I saw my car, I thought, 'Oh, my God, how am I ever going to get that out of there?'" Duchesne said.

The damage included a huge mess in the parking lot at the Castle Gardens 2 condominiums where Duchesne lives, torn-up sidewalks and curbs, road closures and traffic tie-ups that affected morning dropoffs at several schools, police said.

Uh, a washout sinkhole from a pressurized water conduit is a little different than limestone dissolving over time and causing a sudden ground collapse. While it's true that there are different types of sinkholes, and that they can happen almost anywhere, Florida still has the most sinkholes of any place in the US.

Bingo and not negative, realistic. Much like the hurricane situation (no major damage statewide in nearly 10 years) but thanks to our lack of state leadership (and basically not having a "pair") Florida citizens will continue to subsidize other states that are able to regulate insurance companies and kick out the companies that cherry pick coverage like they do here (no homeowners insurance offered but it's okay to underwrite your car for instance).

Wrong. This made the national news and was talked about for days.

It may not be just a Florida problem but Florida has the most sinkholes per sq foot of any other state, not sure where it ranks world wide.

This it what happens when you dig and pour concrete over wetlands...its inevitable.

And if you live in FL when news about FL happens you will naturally pay more attention to it and say that we are being berated by the media.
