I live in Volusia county and most of my neighbors are from up north. Most are not poor or uneducated. They seem very nice. I have no idea what their political interests are since it's never come up in conversation. I'm just not experiencing the kind of person that responded to Craig's list. I have seen a few bumper stickers that would most likely belong to this type of person, but that's about it. Just saying that there are plenty of nice people here who are not knuckle draggers.

It's been up about a month and no one has shown any interest, but today I finally got a reply. Sadly, it's about what I figured it might be....LOL! Here it is, and all I can say, is if you like the arts, jazz, foreign films, etc....this ain't the place for you.

"It's idiots like you two that have demoralized this great nation! This nation was founded as a God fearing Nation. furturemore, tea partiers want to preserve and honor our constitution and our allegience to God....if you have a problem with that you can take your free thinking liberal/communist views to Cuba or Russian where they might be appreciated! I guess you think Obama is doing a great job...growing government and putting everyone on welfare so that the government can control you isn't what our forefathers intended. I prefer FREEDOM...and, your socialistic views on life jeopardize everything that our brave servicemen fought and died for. Educate yourself in the truth (the facts). I fought for my country in Vietnam and i'll be damned if i'm going to let idiots like you two take away what I've fought for!"

Ahem. So much for that!
That response is in keeping with my observations on a recent trip to see family and friends in Fla.
On a recent 3 week trip to the Brookesville/Springhill area i was astounded at the obsession people have with rightwing political viewpoints, seemed no matter where i went politics were the main topic of conversation. I went to the YMCA everyday and after working out people would sit around and drink coffee and tell the group how much they hated the President, taking my Dad to the hospital on the shuttle bus the drivers both ways commented on how much they hate Obama, At least 2 cashiers at Walmart told me how they hate the government, a group in MacDonalds were having great fun telling each other how much they hate liberals, and all the time there my Dad and my Brother never stopped with their watching FOX, listening to Limbaugh and watching tapes of some guy named Beck, and referring to me as the family communist from the nanny state to the north.
I'm starting to think something is in the water down there..
What i found rather odd was how patriotic all these people seemed to think they were but then they trash most aspects of the diversity that makes up their country, from its duly elected leader who they dont merely disagree with they actually hate him with a passion, along with the entire majority demographic that voted him into power, they hate their government they hate visible minorities, they hate the poor, they hate gays, environmentalists, all media except FOX. their list of apparent targets of hate is extensive and drifts into the realms of psychotic (think birthers), I'm left wondering what part of your country does this patriotism represent?.It seemed to me many people were actually getting a rush from the actual emotion of hate.
I'm thinking if you are liberal Florida isnt the place to be..

The wording of that response is eerily similar to many posts by a prolific CD poster from Sarasota. I wonder if she has punked you.

That's also fairly common where I live in Seminole County. It's hard to believe sometimes this state has tipped "Blue" given how out in the open and comfortable many are as you describe. It's also rather creepy how many fall under the trance of Fox News. How that happens to people in terms of developing a steel trap mindset of nothing else but the lies/hatred that is spewed out there is beyond me. I'm not typically not much of conspiracy theorist but one has to wonder how the brain-washing happens, and anyone with any sense of intellect knows to a degree something is up with that.

Yea, way to paint the whole state....

Daytona, Spring Hill or Brooksville are NOTHING like St. Pete, Sarasota, Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, etc. What's the matter with some of you, anyway....

Well it has tipped blue. Twice in the last two presidential elections.

FL is a pretty good microcosm of the country..... you have bigger blue and red areas, and large purple areas in between (panhandle-red, central FL-purple, south FL-blue).

It's Brooksville, a town with a racist history including lynchings. It is named after some racist congressman. I think those type of areas also attracts racist people from other parts of the country.

Here is the history of Brooksville:
Brooksville, Florida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I heard a similar comment about Obama in a store in FT Myers (some crazy white guy yelling inside a store about handouts) and of course from some Republican Cubans in Miami where I live and spend more time. One time I received very poor service from a black clerk and my friend's comment was "Ever since Obama won 'they' have gotten worse, they think they can do whatever they want and take over the country". Irrational much?

Oh yeah and it's not only white and hispanics. I was also physically harrassed with a shopping car in a store by a black woman in the Orlando area. The only reason she could have attacked me was my race as I had not interacted with her. I guess she thought I was Zimmerman's sister. There is racist trash in every race.

This country just has way too much racial tension.

You all do realize when you are talking about people in Florida you are talking about people from everywhere in the country and world, right? Almost everyone living in the state is from somewhere else and they formed their views there. Also how do you even know the people you over hear are Florida residents? Fl tags are not a sure sign because of all the rentals. Daytona is a little town until the tourists/snow birds are here so don't be so quick to attribute what you hear to residents unless you are hanging out in the bars west of the intercoastal with the rednecks like you can find in any town in any state. JMHO and I am not a Daytona resident.

Since Mike was kind enough to reply to our ad, I decided to send him the following email through craigslist, which hopefully (please, please) cloaks your real email address. I hope he takes it in the proper spirit.....all bloody seriousness w/ a dash of sarcasm. He sounds like a guy w/ a good sense of humor, right?

"Mike,
Hello. How's it going? Thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule of attending Klan meetings and selling subscriptions to Soldier of Fortune on the telephone. I know someone of your obvious good upbringing and high intelligence is always busy with social activities and the like. Unfortunately, you do not quite fit our needs for buddies, but I think the NRA, NASCAR, Jesus For Fascists and the like would be a MUCH better fit for you.

Now tell me the truth you old rascal, you're off your meds again, aren't you? I know that Thorazine is a tough one, but you really should consider your doctor's advice. Wishing you and your family all the best, and if I get up to that tree that they all live in any time soon, I will tell them hello myself.
Peace,
Liberals Against Stupidity."

By the by, I do own a gun (but think the NRA is totally nutso), and I do enjoy NASCAR. Give me a beer and a NASCAR race on a sunny afternoon, in 10 minutes I'm sound asleep on the couch in the Florida room. Better than a sleeping pill. I also have no trouble with real Christians, and as soon as I meet one I will be happy to talk to them. Joke people, joke! No hate mail, I got enough problems with Mike already. Life is absurd and all too short. Have a little fun with it.

I wonder if I should have told him we're an interracial couple w/ a couple of relatives that are gay (true). He'd probably be happy to hear that.
