Senate OKs 75mph speed limits and allowed 60mph zones to go up to 65 and 65 up to 70. Not all zones will be changed but I can think of plenty of areas of the Turnpike and I-75 which should be. Good news. It needs to pass the house also but that seems to be what will happen.

Now all you need is the Texas 85 mph. Man, flying through west Texas or toll roads at 85 is nice. Just wondering how long it will take to implement.

Yup, and those nanny-state types also ignore evidence contrary to their position:

Data from the state Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows that between 2005 and 2012, the number of traffic deaths declined every year but in 2012, when the number of fatalities rose slightly, from 2,400 in 2011 to 2,430 in 2012.

State officials cautioned that various factors contribute to the number of fatalities, including safer cars, increased seat belt use, traffic volume and the amount of time drivers spend on the roads.

Sen. Jeff Clemens, D-Lake Worth, a co-sponsor of the higher speed limit, said traffic deaths in Florida are lower today than in the mid 1990s, when the universal speed limit was 55 mph.

“Most people innately understand how fast they can travel, and how safe they can drive,” Clemens said. “This bill allows DOT to set the speed limit based on engineering and science, not based on the whims of politicians.”

Time for them to hand over their drivers license and get a room at the nursing home.

I was mosying down US 19 the other day, 55, 58 MPH, middle lane. I looked in the rearview and saw a blue hair driving a Lincoln. She passed me and was gone down the road. She must have been doing 70 Speed limit is 55. I guess she was running late for bingo.

Yikes, I had a driver scaring me the last time I was on the turnpike and he wasn't blue-haired and I was already over the speed limit. Too many unrepsonsible dumb idiots out there who don't care.

Good News??? Makes us more like Texas???

These are not positives, folks!

We came to Florida with the idea that it would be as far away from Texas as we could get w/o growing gills and living in the ocean, and this place already has the most dangerous drivers I have ever seen in my life. Doesn't Florida already lead the nation in pedestrian and cyclist deaths? I thought nothing those air heads in Tallahassee could do would surprise me, but they just keep on, keeping on, up there. Plenty of late night material for Colbert inside those senate chambers. Only, if you live here, it ain't funny.
