Hello,
My son is considering moving to Florida from New England. He is a master barber and instructor. He is looking for an accepting, friendly safe community. Ideally he would like a house as he isn't fond of apartment living. We are planning a road trip to Florida in July. Do you have any suggestions/tips?

Florida is a big state with very varied regions. That being said early 20s, barber, I would have to reccomend the "Big 3" of Florida as your first look.

Orlando area
Tampa Bay area
Miami/Ft. Lauderdale area.

Obvious choices I know but that is what comes to mind. Miami it won't be easy to live in a home right away, expensive real estate market. Tampa and Orlando have lower cost of living.

It would be easier to give suggestions if we knew exactly what he was looking for.

What are his hobbies?

Does he need a city that's going 24/7, or does he prefer something quieter (more suburban)?

What are his housing requirement (beds/baths) and what is his budget? Is he looking to buy or rent?

Does he have a job lined up?

Why does he want to come to FL?

The more specific you can be, the better.

Hobbies-video games he is pretty quiet keeps to himself. He doesn't go out much, isn't into clubs.

He will most likely be renting at first. He wants to open his own place but knows he will have to work someplace for a couple of years to establish a client base, he does not have a job lined up yet. We live in the suburbs now. He likes the cities but has never lived in one. He is pretty naive when it comes to street smarts. As I said he likes his privacy but can't afford a lot.

He does not know anyone down there. I am hoping he will partner up with someone older to establish his shop. He wants to move to Florida because he hates the cold in New England.

Miami & Ft.Laud are very gay friendly...you might want to look into Wilton Manors, its one of the gayest areas in the country, just outside of Ft.Lauderdale...my partner and I are a gay couple in our late 20s, we live in Miami suburbs, so if you have any specific questions feel free to message me

It would be better to be a cosmetologist than a barber which is basically useless by comparison.

I would say St. Petersburg if you are looking for gayer areas without the price tag! Though, one of my good friends is a stylist and he says the hairstylist market here is really over saturated.... But he may not need as much business since the cost of living is cheaper here...

Still not knowing budget (which is a major factor) I would focus in on Wilton Manors as well. It is an older crowd compared to a place like South Beach, but it's more along the lines of what it sounds like he's after.

He will be a master barber which means he can do color and other chemical services like a hair dressers. He will also have his cosmetology license as he started school for that but didn't like the school. His budget will depend on what they make down there. I figured we would visit some salons while there. I think we are going to start in Jacksonville, move down to del ray beach and Fort Lauderdale, go over to Naples and Tampa so we have a good idea of what is down there. I am assuming he will get roommates or a partner at some point which will help.
