Hi ! We are a young African American couple with a 6 year old son looking to move to the Tampa area from NJ. Any suggestions as to what area we should look more into ? I know I definitely want a good school system for our son. Thank you guys ! Oh, and I am also in the healthcare field, a medical assistant.

You might be better off staying the NE. The money is better.

What does your husband do for a living? As an MA, I don't think you necessarily make enough on your own to support the family, so I'm assuming he works. You'll find work anywhere you go. He, depending on what he does, might have a harder time.

I just got done talking to someone about this. It's not about how much you make, but rather how much you can save. A friend of mine's son just got out of college. He got 2 offers: 1 in Boston starting at $90k/yr, and one in Pittsburgh at $46k/yr. He took the one in Pittsburgh. Why? I'll let you figure that out.

Spoiler: A year later, he was able to put a down payment on a house in a nearby town in Ohio. The house is fairly new, on 10 acres. Cost $100,000.

I moved here from Jersey 16 years ago.

I think as far as a nice family-oriented area, I liked North Tampa (Carrollwood/Northdale). New Tampa is nice - I'm not sure if "traffic" is an issue. Getting in and out of Brandon/New Tampa/ and even North Tampa can be an ordeal. Schools are good in all the areas. I love South Tampa, it's a bit pricier and "in my opinion" geared a little for the young single professional.
