I prefer "pre-diving". When I connect with the right people they give me stuff before it hits the dumpster. Sometimes they even pay me to take stuff away! I would bring my Bobcat and trailer and haul off leftover materials. Dumpster diving is what I do whan I get there too late.

I do occasionally salvage some nice furniture pieces from the dumpster that can be easily refinished. It amazes me what people throw away.

A couple of friends and I share stuff we find.

I might find something curbside (sorry, I'm not advanced enough to hit the dumpsters yet !) and even if I can't use it, if I figure one of my friends can, I pick it up, and they do the same.

Or I'll find something, like a chair, and use it for a while, and when I'm done with it, I pass it along, recycling it yet again.

If you came into my home, you would not be able to pick out the pieces of furniture that came from the curb - some of them are expensive antiques that guests compliment regularly .

I am always picking stuff up and giving stuff away. Useless stuff no one wants ends up as energy for the home or scrap for the metal collection. My friends also drop stuff off. Every re-use of something is good for the environment and even better for your finances!

I've taken things from the side of the road intended for garbage pickup more then once over the years. I don't much anymore I was doing it before it was popular. I see it alot here of late. I think most people who throw things out like that know someone will pick it up. I have thrown things out and make guesses to myself as to how long it will be there before being taken. lol

I don't go around from house to house and purposely looking for thown out items no. But if I ride by and see thing I have been known to stop and pick it up more then once.

I have noticed that people have trailer on the back of their trucks ect for extra items. But here in Polk County recycling is big and we have lots of recycling places. I also go to the county recycling area to get useable items that have been discarded. Things such as paint, oil, fertilizer, ect depending on what was left behind that would of ended up in a landfill possibly that would of never disolved. They check out items then offer them back to the public alot of painter and or countruction people drop off things there I have seen them droping things off. I have gotten some really nice thing some even brand new.
