...that a family of 3 clearing $2300 a month cannot live decently in Florida. Am I right?!? I need to show him proof, I.e., your responses, that this can't happen. He thinks we can live by the coast on $600-$750 rent. I call bull****. Not to mention that health insurance and car insurance will be phenomenally high. Two weeks ago, I had written down...and made him read...14 advantages of living in Indiana. 14!!!! Only 2 disadvantages. He won't listen. He thinks Hialeah is still a paradise and that FL will be as idyllic as it was in the 1960s. (Maybe some spots still are, but only for the very rich)

We make double that and can't afford to buy a house in SWFL. We've tried 2 times now.. Average rent here for a 2 bedroom is around $1700 a month. Section 8 starts at $1000 a month and you won't find any to speak of. Even the poorest parts of where I am rent doesn't go for under $1100. I've seen single rooms in someones house for rent for $950. Thats about as low as you're gonna get here.

After 34 years we've had enough and are moving to NC. If we made $2300 a month we'd be living in our cars, not near the beach. First thing people notice when they move to Florida..... sticker shock. Most think they're coming here to live near the beach and find the only beach they can afford is their seasonal job serving snowbirds and vacationers in the beach hotel they work at. That's the reality of many people who come and go 1 year later from here.

Can you survive on that money in Fla? HA! Yah right.

Bottom line: Don't move to Florida unless you have a decent well paying job lined up or a bankroll of mega dollars. Fortunately I'll have both when I move there later this year.

I second this!
OP that budget could work for one person who had a roommate and still couldn't really enjoy life.
In South Florida a 1 bedroom apt that's in a so so area is $1500 and coming from Indiana your car insurance would double.
$600 might and I stress might get 1 person a room in someone's house to rent.
Look for rentals on realtor.com or an apartment website to prove it.
(There are a lot of scams so if you see something super cheap it's a scam)

Well i was left a lot of money years ago from my uncles will and a nursing home law suit, paid cash for my house and down graded and moved to a bummy area were cost of living is dead cheap. I still work to do something where i won't be bored. Home taxes are only around 300 a year, water bill is like 19 a month and so on. I have no wife or kids so i do just fine and have plenty of money to buy Corvettes and plenty of toys roy.

You might find something for that price in a rough part of Daytona Beach, Panama City, or Pensacola, but certainly nothing in South Florida, unless you can qualify for Section 8.
