I was looking at Tampa area originally but the schools did not appear to have good ratings. That’s why Sarasota was on our list (it was listed as the 2nd best school district in the state).

Crime is a bigger issue for Orange and Osceola Counties then the surrounding counties. In fact, 90% of the people I know in that area moved to Orlando and within a year they moved out of the immediate Orlando area (Orange & Osceola Counties) and into one of the surrounding counties (Lake & Seminole Counties). It's really the best of both worlds. Quiet and safe communities that are just a short commute to the Orlando job market. If you do live in Orange county, seriously consider the Winter Garden, Windermere & Bay Hill areas. I would also STRONGLY recommend living in a single family home over living in an apartment, townhouse or condo. Well that's my 2 cents. Hope it helps.
We were looking into Windermere and winter garden. Why would you recommend single family home? We were going to rent an apartment initially when we get down there in Windermere. We currently live in an old single family home and the upkeep (200 year old home) has take a toll on us (expensive and just a hassle). We were looking forward to apartment living for at least a year but if there is a reason you don’t recommend it, please let me know.

Not sure where you were referencing for that information, but that's not the case. Below are examples from two of the better school districts in the area (East Lake-Tarpon Springs and Westchase). Others not mentioned but equally good for the most part are South Tampa, Lithia-Fishhawk Ranch, Valrico-Bloomingdale and Land O Lakes.

I agree with you except for Land o Lakes. I would never recommend that anyone move there. Horrible, horrible little town in my opinion.

Have you considered Bradenton? Eastern Manatee county has highly-rated schools and offers close proximity to I-75 for easy commuting to Tampa if necessary. Plus, Bradenton is home to several corporate office locations including Foot Locker, Boar's Head, Nature's Own, Bealls, etc.

I second FLKitties suggestion. Lakewood Ranch area has good schools and is a decent commuting distance from either Tampa or St. Pete.

Areas in Pinellas County have good schools as well. Oldsmar or Palm Harbor maybe?

If you can get a job in Sarasota, the schools are great. Focus on applying to jobs in the area.

Your other point: If you are worried about hot summers, I don't think you will see much of a relief on the coast vs. inland. I think this claim is typically exaggerated by Floridians. All of Florida is oppressive and muggy for a majority of the year. The gulf is basically just a hot humid puddle. Is a slight difference in humidity going to be that noticeable when the real feel is 105-110? I don't think so.

I disagree here and would say it depends upon topography. I live at hell's gate near the interior of the state where there is little to no breeze most of the summer with 92-94 degree highs a regular thing. When I visit a friend in Safety Harbor I can literally watch the thermometer on my car drop like a rock from the mid to high 90s into the mid 80s as I drive over SR60 from the mainland into mid-Pinellas County around Safety Harbor, which is at the narrowest point in the Pinellas peninsula.

I wouldn't disagree, I just think the difference is made up in humidity.

Mostly just a personal thing. I just don't feel much difference when I go to the coast vs when Im inland. I think when you get to central/South Florida it's all extremely hot and the difference isn't nearly as noticeable as like California or something.

Theres a slight breeze to blow the hot humid soupy air around I guess.

Some people can feel the difference for sure.

I just noticed this after rereading some of the thread. I'm assuming you are going off of GreatSchools rankings which have come into question given their ratings which tend to favor less diverse schools in "better neighborhoods" versus just test grades/performance. Check out SchoolDigger which does a much better job of tracking performance regardless of demographics, but does however still provide a break down of that information for those inclined to use it. Utilizing their rankings, Sarasota County is 6th among traditional county school districts. https://www.schooldigger.com/go/FL/search.aspx However as previously mentioned consider the fact lower ranking districts (like Hillsborough or Pinellas for instance) will have sub-districts that out perform the higher ranking full districts, and are only dragged down in overall scores by poor performers elsewhere in the district. In other words, dig a little versus accepting the overall scores as gospel.

Kyle hits this one right on the head. Great info here.
