My daughter is going to be doing her optometry residency at the VA in Lake City and I am trying to help her find a place in Gainesville to live for a year. She has a little dog and a very limited budget. It would also be great if the apartment was furnished. Since we don't know which areas are safe (my biggest concern) we are hoping you could point us in the right direction. What parts of town should we be looking at? Any particular apartments that y'all could recommend? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If her budget is very limited to find anything safe and largely furnished is nearly impossible. Her best route is to go with a roommate and find another grad or professional student sharing their place. Craigslist is usually a good source for options, here are a few currently listed.

Hello, I'm pretty new to Gainesville but it was easy to learn that the NW quadrant and the bedroom communities of Tioga, Jonesville, and Newberry are considered safe parts of town.

Alachua also rates well in its crime data. It's a town of about 10,000 people, a bit north of Gainesville and therefore a shorter commute to Lake City than Gainesville is.

Good luck!
