I am a high school teacher returning to Florida after 15 years teaching in Greece. My husband and I are looking at the Port St. Lucie area in order to be close to our son who is attending FAU. Although I have applied to the State Department of Education for renewal of my teaching certification, I am wondering what the market for teachers in this part of Florida might be. If anyone might have some feedback I would certainly appreciate it.

Florida has changed a lot in 15 years. Port St. Lucie is very expensive. Good Luck.

I too have changed a great deal in the last 15 years. I have learned that I don't need to have all those things that money can buy. A lesson that comes with age I imagine. We will probably rent for at least a year until we liquidate our property in Athens. After that a small retirement house in northern Florida is the likely plan, but ,who knows anything can happen. Meanwhile, the job market is our immediate concern.

Can't help you with SE Florida, but teachers are needed in my neck of the woods (northwest Panhandle.)
But pay might not be what you're used to.

Thanks Cil. I realize the panhandle has a lot to offer, particularly in terms of natural beauty. However, due to the desire to stay close to our son, we will, at least for the short term, be looking at the PSL area. I wonder if someone has some information to share on quality of life in Stuart or Jensen Beach? or even Fort Pierce. We will be interested in renting, not really looking to buy for a couple years.

Kalimera,

There have been recent threads on Palm Beach County and the Gold Coast region in general in the past few weeks. Try putting your cities of interest, as well as key words such as "teachers", "teaching" "education" "schools", etc., in the search engine and see what you come up with.

As for the education job market, though enrollments are down from their peaks a few years ago, the region is trying to tout itself as an education and research center.

In any case, probably a good source of information is the county board of education, plus I'm sure that forum members living in the region will provide more in-depth information on this thread as the weekend progresses.

Kales euxes gia to mellon kai kali Xronia!

Euxaristo Para Poli Bale002!!
I was indeed able to find a couple great posts from PSLOldtimer and Pianogal that addressed the exact issues I have. I am new to this forum but am learning. Yes, you can teach an old teacher a few things. Also find ing out there are more than a few Greeks around as well.

I believe the demand for teachers is high almost everywhere in Florida. Port St. Lucie has starting pay in the mid 30s, I believe. Not sure what a teacher with experience could expect. Palm Beach County pays teachers more (close to or at 40k), though I think I read recently that Palm Beach County schools LOST student population this past year.

If I had a choice, I would stay in Greece. The market is good, but salaries suck. Port St. Lucie is going thru the roof $$.
