I am just starting out my working life out of college. I graduated in May of this year and took a job with a company in central Illinois. Needless to say, the midwest is everything it's cracked up to be...not so great, for me anyways. The job is also not what I had imagined, I have become a corporate drone that sits behind a computer for 8 hours a day. I have always loved the beach and I have been a certified SCUBA diver since I was 12. Anyways, I was hoping to get some advice from someone that knows about good places to potentially move that are a reasonable distance from the beach (Gulf preferably) for a young single male who makes about $40k a year. I am even open to ideas like finding a roommate. The biggest concerns are a place with plenty of young singles, things to do, safety, and reasonably clean/comfortable/affordable living space. Any recommendations?

I am afraid that I have a bug to live modestly so that I can take a job on a dive boat. Does this sound crazy? Am I asking too much? Thanks for the help!

Diving by far is best in the keys. Specifically, the area south of Marathon key (Loo key?), but there are plenty of great dive sites all over the keys. I wouldn't consider the area to be great for singles though - Tampa/St. Pete is probably the best for that. My brother moved to Tampa from Naples (where he grew up), and he loves the Tampa area.

Money will be tighter though. Rent in small towns here is much higher than towns in the Midwest. It's even worse in the cities. I could rent a nice apartment in the best area of St. Louis for half the price I could get one here in Orlando, and this is a much smaller city. Salaries for my career are the same or even slightly higher in St. Louis - many jobs tend to pay less in Florida than other parts of the country.

Personally, I'm leaving Florida for the Midwest, so you can have my spot.

The Gulf Coast of Texas would probably be more affordable, especially when it comes to real estate.

I wouldn't go there after what just happened with Ike.

That's true, especially since it's mostly underwater right now after the storm!

Tampa is your best bet. You may need a roommate.

I'd say the diving is better on the east coast-Palm Beach County to Ft. Pierce- than in the Keys.
