Hi, my husband and I are really thinking of moving to Key Largo/Monroe county. Many questions we have... I know we first need to find a job. I am a EMT-B and he is a Paramedic. I know that housing is pricey and we have a 1 year old and 10 year old. We live in Delaware at the moment in a pricey area near the beach. I have been doing alot of research and I see the schools are decent. How about child care? Are there good day care centers around? Closest hospital? are there local firehouses? We both love to volunteer on the fire and rescue side.

We are not dreamers. We know it will be hard to leave friends and family and start over in a place we no nobody,, but we have a feeling this is best for us after weighing our options. We are extremely hard workers and feel we have alot to offer a community. We have visted before and adore it there. Is there employment agencies? I have no idea where to start to look for the job search. Please let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thank you so much in advance.

Mandie

Monroe County, FL - Employment Opportunities (http://www.monroecounty-fl.gov/pages/MonroeCoFL_Personnel/employment - broken link)

Monroe County, FL - Monroe County Fire Rescue (http://www.monroecounty-fl.gov/Pages/MonroeCoFL_Fire/index - broken link)

Monroe County Fire services all of unincorporated Monroe County. Ocean Reef, Key Largo, Islamarada, Marathon and Key West all have their own departments. EMS in Key West is run by AMR.

I would look at the hospitals for employement as a start.

It's been awhile, but I think they have three hospitals. One in Key Largo, Marathon, and Key West.

I have no idea about daycare.

I would caution you to secure housing and a job before you move.

The keys are very, very expensive. Hopefully Tallrick will see this and chime in.

I didn't know there was a hospital in Key Largo, I have never seen one???? There is the new one in Tavenier just a few miles south of Key Largo, a Baptist Hospital. If i remember correctly key Largo has good if not great schools. The only down side to living in the Keys is pay and the cost of living. A double wide trailer on a canal can run you around $300k still, for a trailer, still better than a few years ago prices. I think the Key largo Fire department is all volunteer.

In downtown Miami at the "Brickell" fire station, there were over 1,000 applicants for 35 positions. This was in January I believe. A buddy of mine has a brother who just became a firefighter, and they just threw him under the bus by putting him at the Liberty City station - the absolute worst part of Miami.

Mariners hospital, just like baptist, palatially baptist hospital owned i guess.
I live in key largo, and when you do need to go to the hospital, its in and OUT!
My wife got cut in her leg, and needed stitches. The doctor stitched her up in 20 minutes.
Key largo and up south, is a pretty good place to live. I believe if your a fisherman, ocean lover this is the place to be. All i do is fish, and sell bait to the yellow bait house " for all you locals ". Anyway right now is time to buy in the keys if you can afford it. Prices are really low, and i say in 4 years my 400k house would be worth a milion dollars

There is a hospital in Tavernier: Mariners Hospital (http://www.baptisthealth.net/bhs/en/hospital/front/0,2250,3466,00.html - broken link)

Baptist Health also own a new hospital in Homestead.

Housing prices are down, so if someone has the money or can get a loan, now is the time to buy. Jobs may be harder to come by.
