I'm moving to Florida next Wednesday and have been calling around to get auto insurance quotes ahead of time. All of the quotes I've been getting are AT LEAST a hundred dollars per month more than I am paying currently in Ky. Have others who have moved to Florida experienced the same thing? Why is auto insurance in Fla. so expensive?

I even asked if I could drop collision and comprehensive coverage and the resulting quotes were still higher than paying for full coverage in Kentucky by about 30 bucks a month.

Honey, you don't know expensive car insurance until you move to the northeast corridor. Florida car insurance is pretty reasonable. I insure three cars here for less than two cost me in suburban NJ. (Same coverage limits, and two of the cars were on the NJ policy, so I'm comparing apples to apples.)

I love when people base what is expensive/inexpensive to what it costs in (always) NY or NJ.

But part of the reason that car insurance is "universally" high is because of a few reasons. One, the drivers. We have the aggressive speeders who drive like they are still on the NJ turnpike, we got the lil' ol' grannies that drive 35 in a 55, we have the constant hit and runs (especially in S FL and Orlando, Tampa areas). We have the young crowd (lots of big state universities = lots of kids), we have the tourists that dont know where they are going, and we have the people that are from some foreign country that just got their license and have no idea what a turn signal is, no idea what merging is, and basically lacking driving ettiquette (sp?).

Dont mean to sound angry or anything, but driving here makes me insane at times! And I'm from here so I'm pretty used to it! And sometimes I am still thrown off by how stupid and rude people can be. It has really changed over the last 10-15 years!

My thoughts were that the rates must be so high because of the risk of damage due to hurricanes and other natural disasters, but I must have been wrong because the rates are still high when collision and comprehensive coverage is rejected.

I'm paying $200 a month to insure two vehicles registered in Ky. Everyone I know thinks that is too much, but since I'm young and male I put up with it. To keep my current levels of coverage in Florida I would have to pay $313 monthly. $3600 a year for car insurance seems excessive to me.

The rates would be the same in CT, MA, RI parts of PA, MD. I mentioned NJ because I had specific experience with that state and my currently insured cars.

Florida insurance is probably around the mean for the entire country.

According to an AOL Money and Finance article (as of 2007) we (Florida) had like the 9th highest car insurance rates in the country. Other states that had higher rates than FL include states like NY, NJ, RI... (<--- like annerk stated) and we were actually higher than PA, CT, and MA.

One of my colleagues retired to Florida a couple of years ago. He shared with us that his auto insurance doubled from what he was paying in PA (near Pittsburgh). His agent explained that the significant price difference was attributable to Florida's lack of a car safety inspection program (more cars on the roads with safety issues) and the higher percentage of Florida drivers driving without auto insurance.

That doesn't surprise me in the least.
