I appreciate any advice or suggestions about communities in the Florida area that are more adult friendly. I want to relocate from PA and buy or rent a home. Thanks for your help.

Just a question. If you are just turning 55, why do you want to live in an adult community? I cannot speak for them in Florida, but I did look into renting in one here in New York.

You will be hard pressed to find many people under about 70. Honest. That was my impression from my searching. I am 58. When I was walking about with the rental agent, the homeowners who were outside (was summer), actually stopped and STARED at me. I got a very uncomfortable feeling. We stopped to talk to one woman and she asked me if I was looking for a place for my MOTHER. Seriously.

I applied to rent at one (mostly for price) and was turned down. The agent outright told me the board thought I was too "young". They rented the unit to two sisters in their 70s.

If you are renting/buying into a condo which only has 1 or 2 bedroom units, no playgrounds, etc., you will not have families with a whole lot of kids, if that is what you are looking for.

Just my experience and opinion.

Default Wellington

West Coast of Florida. Spring Hill.........The Wellington over 55, clubs
trips..........clubhouse with dining...........nice homes......$180,000 and up
close to shopping 1 mile either way........hospital 1 mile........funeral home 1/2 mile.....golf............close to Suncoast Parkway for trips to the South.
Only drawbacks, this is sinkhole alley, taxes are high, homeowners insurance out of sight. Traffic.

Although I'm not a big fan of manufactured housing communities, I have several friends who live in them and love it. They are "Coquina Crossings," just south of St. Augustine and "Bulow Village" in Flagler Beach.

pearl you didn;t say what part of Fla interested you.
I am up here in Jacksonville. There is Del webbs "sweetwater" 55+ when I was their with our friends looking at the hosue they were building I was so impressed that I asked if they every let under 55 move in . They said they do allow a % of 50. I told her I had a few years to wait she then said what about your husband I told her he even had more years to wait
I was impressed by the clubhouse and how many different "activites" they offer. I am not talking about the "shuffleboard " of yore.
They have wine tastings, golf clinics, water color classes oh yeah and parties !!
What part of PA are you coming from I grew up outside of Phila.

New Port Richey has a very nice 55+ community called timber Greens. It is 45 min away from Tampa and there is three great mall within 10min to 30 min away. All the homes are on a good piece of property also and many golf courses in this area.
I for one would think twice about moving into one again since I had lived in one in CA.We moved in when my husband was 55 and I was 51.My neighbors had children my age and I was not happy there some of these older ones had much to much time to act as HOA law enforces.

That can happen anywhere! One of the "Condo Commandos" where I used to live loved to crawl around the parking lot to see if anyone's car was leaking fluids.

So many retirees in Florida with so little to do.....Grin & bear it.
