I have never heard of anyone having a Christmas Eve dinner tradition. Hmmm. I always loved Christmas Eve better than Christmas Day.

The Polish side of my family used to have the traditional Wigilia similar to what elnina described -- ours was complete with smoked fish and pickled herring (and pickled great-uncles!).

Now, since so many of the elder generation has passed on, we have a simple fish meal. My aunt sends me a hunk of oplatek every year, which fascinates the spouse's Quaker English family to no end.

Wonder what they would have thought of the pickled great-uncles? LOL

I'm always annoyed when people I know who are Italian say they have a "Feast of the Seven Fishes" and they have almost all non-fish forms of seafood.

Crabs, shrimp are crustaceans, a form of arthropod, not fish.

Mussels, clams, and calamari/squid are moluscs, not fish.

Fish are vertebrates (simply, they have a spine), a subcategory of chordates (put simply, things with spinal cords).

At best, a "Feast of the Seven Fishes" often contains maybe one actual fish, and all the rest are other kinds of seafood.

I always try to point this out, that their tradition it hopelessly misnamed. (Yes, I'm probably a pain in the --- like that, but I can't help myself when people are WRONG).

They argue and argue saying that "shellfish" are fish. Sorry, they're not. Take a freaking 8th grade biology class sometime.

I'm all about wonderful traditions, but I hate stupid errors that people refuse to correct.

I'd prefer a "feast of the seven vodkas" anyway.

You are so right-who cares-build a bridge and get over it.

I think the Feast of the Seven Fishes has evolved into modern times and for many includes shell fish-what ever!!

I've never been to one of those "feasts" (is it a Catholic thing?), but please pass the lobster. And the crab. And the butter.

I think if he were at my Italian feast I'd just give him a live lobster......and watch the results.
Anyway, going back to our regularly scheduled thread, we do nothing special on Christmas Eve as far as food, maybe a pot of my Dads famous bean soup and jalapeno cornbread.
We're usually busy visiting with family and friends that have come home for the holiday.
I usually have the fridge stuffed with the makings for Christmas dinner, so theres not room for anything else, lol!
