Another side of pesticide use and the types used in Latin America is off the radar. These countries do not have FOIA as in the US and corruption is the norm .. IE.. Mordida commonly known as a bribe.
South American countries regularly import pesticides and fertilizers from China.
Since I lived in Mexico I will say!!! Not all growers use banned products.There are many honest hard working farmers whose families must work these fields and they are not stupid to the ill effects of pesticide use. The last thing they want is their families poisoned and maimed.
I used to live outside of Jocotepec Mexico, where Driscoll's was located. I've watched the growing process from beginning to end. Don't know about pesticide use but its a huge operation.
I would buy a kilo of strawberries for 20 pesos these would be the ones that were culls. Driscoll only sends the perfect ones to the US.
When I lived in the DF from 93-94, I remember my Mexican GM telling me I shouldn't have an issue with eating in Mexico. I was living in a decent part of town with potable water I didn't have to boil. Thus I could wash veggies in water only and be perfectly fine. I didn't get sick on anything I ate in Mexico.
However, the advice on eating came with one caveat - "Do not eat strawberries unless you soak them in bleach." He added that it wasn't due to pesticides as much as it was to do with being watered with unfiltered H2O that contained animal fecal matter.
Given this was pre-internet (well, we had AOL, Prodigy and CompuServe) there was no opportunity to research soaking veggies in bleach (turns out it's not really harmful if done right). So I didn't eat strawberries.
SSK, correçt! This is a worldwide problem with wildlife entering fields!
I am aware of the type of barriers used at one of the Driscoll sites. When I was there I saw a dog freely roaming inside the hothouse.
If you're a worker your required to walk about a quarter mile to the bathrooms which are on the other side of the road. You will see stations setup prior to re entry . your required to wash in a solution and wear surgical type shoes and hairnets.
Most workers are compliant but as human nature is rules are not always followed.
