Yes well they give you a DOUBLE CHEESEBURGER/HAMBURGER by default which is why its more... If you ask for a SINGLE BURGER,it is cheaper!
"Cheaper" is a relative term. One single "little" burger is 1/4 pound of ground chuck (80/20), prior to cooking.
Current market price for ground chuck at -retail- prices, is around $3.59 per pound in this area of the country (this is dairy country, not beef cattle country).
I have to assume that since 5 Guys buys in bulk, they're getting it for significantly less than $3.59/pound.
A "little" Five Guys burger, is $3.89 at the closest location to my zip code (2 towns away).
That means, 1/4 pound of beef plus all the toppings I want (which would be - cheese, and mushrooms, and a bun, period) costs me more than it'd cost to buy a whole pound of beef.
So no, it's not cheaper. It's less pricey. Semantics yes, but a discernable difference. It's still an expensive 1/4-pounder. Also, they make them well-done, and I prefer mine still mooooving
We have a chain in the midwest called Culvers which has the best burgers I think by far in the midwest , Now I was down south a while ago and five guys was nothing special there , Aslo frickers has some awesome burgers and fries too .
We recently got a Culvers here in Tucson, and ate there a couple of weeks ago. Delicious burgers! We liked Five Guys pretty well, and also like In 'n Out, all relatively recent additions.
I live in Portland Oregon. There are half a dozen local burger places that are better and cheaper then Five Guys. When they opened their first location up here, the hype got them a line out the door for about three months.
I jumped in on the hype, but was less then impressed. Since then I've been forced by circumstances while traveling to eat at a few different locations. Every time I've failed to actually finish the meal as it's so nasty tasting. Twice I was sick an hour later. With the fries especially, I'm almost to the point that the smell of them makes me want to vomit.
A 1/2-lb. burger from Five Guys is a dinner by itself, it will fill you up. At under $6, with a complete array of toppings and free peanuts while you wait, I don't consider that expensive in the least, for something that you're not cooking yourself.
