Oh, I wish!! No amount of knowledge, facts, arguments will convince my husband that this is a perfectly safe thing to do. We will forever be without of the ease of a prepared dinner when we arrive home.
Other than this, he is actually a rational person.
Don't do it as often as I'd like. Need more recipes! Have had no problem in over 4 years
Check out the crockpot365 site - I've tried a number of her recipes and many were yummy and some were a bit of a departure from the typical pot roast tasting meals that usually come out of crock pots.
Here's what the official CrockPot (tm) site has to say in their FAQ:
Quote:
Can slow cookers be unattended?
Crock-Pot® Slow Cookers are designed to run all day. The outer heating base will be hot as it cooks. The heating element in the heating base functions at a low wattage and may be used on your countertops.
Besides being lower wattage than most television sets, crock pots also have a safety fuse built in that will shut off the power in the unlikely case that it would overheat.
Why do millions of them get left on all day, every day? Because they are convenient and useful and completely safe.
I'm the biggest worry-wart (did I leave the stove on? did I lock the front door? did I even CLOSE the front door???) and, although I work from home, I have put stuff in the crock pot and then gone out to run errands.
The whole modern intent of the crock pot is that you can start dinner before you even leave for work and it's ready for you when you get home. I wouldn't worry about it for a second.
OMG - you have described me to a T!
We did have one instance where we had a meal in the crock pot and then went on vacation. I feared I left the crock pot on. We had to call the neighbors and tell them how to break into our house.
Most of time this worry is of no practical use - I usually go back and check, only to find that things are just fine - but this time, I actually DID leave it on.
I use my Crock Pot regularly two time a week. I do leave it on while I go to work. I do park it on the stove top rather than the counter top. Once I noticed that the counter top under it was very warm, so I decided to not take a chance.
I have mine sitting on an old cutting board on the porch, which is 3 season.
