When I was in the second grade, back in the dark ages, we were served hot dogs with sauerkraut in the school cafeteria, and my teacher insisted that I eat it, even though the very smell made me nauseated. Since I was a compliant child, I ate it. The teacher had the interesting task of explaining to my mother why she was called to pick me up after I vomited. I took my lunch to school after that, and I have never tried sauerkraut since.
Are you sure it was the sauerkraut and not the hot dog?
Worst thing ever was mussels at a restaurant. I love almost all crustaceans (clams, shrimp, crab, lobster, etc) but I ordered mussels in red sauce and I still don't know if it was just their food or mussels in general since I refuse to eat them again. It tasted like the smell of a dirty has station bathroom in my mouth.
As a kid, I had the good fortune to travel to China. This was before Westerners regularly visited China, so I had many meals that were traditional Chinese cuisine -- not the Westernized version. While I liked most everything we were served, and I tried everything because I felt bad with all the poverty I saw around, I have to say the raw sea cucumber was the worst thing I ever ate.
It had the texture of a cold, slippery, soft rubber ball. After trying to chew it, and gagging in the process, I finally swallowed it whole.
