I was cleaning and organizing my spices the other day and counted 150+ different spices. That does not include anything in my secondary, don't use too often spice cupboard.
I don't buy spice blends, except for curries. I like to make my own. I also buy them in their whole form whenever feasible, so I can roast and crush them myself.
Does anyone else know about how many spices they have? I was surprised to see how many I have.
I have 50 plus but throw out about 10-15 twice a year. I date them with a marker so I know when to trash them. I've been buying them from the bulk section to cut down on waste though.
I know people who have spices from over 3 years ago. I even saw my mom had a spice from 9 years ago. Just no!

That is a lot of spices! Where and how do you store all of them?
First, they are not anywhere near my stove where steam and heat can get them. They are in air tight containers. Some of them are in very small amounts, like saffron threads. They fit on three large shelves in a closed cupboard. Several times a year, I cook for anywhere from 50 - 350 people, so I go through lots of spices and replenish them often. There is a place I get to a few times a year that has about every spice you can imagine, all freshly ground or whole and I stock up whenever I am there.
Enough so that I get conked in the head by a jar of dill every time I open the cupboard.
Some of them no doubt date to the Reagan Administration. When they get bland, I just use more.
