I didn't know this - you can freeze whole lemons!! What a great idea if you find a deal on them. Just pop the entire whole lemon in the freezer supposedly. Note: I haven't done this yet but plan to try it.

You would do better to juice it first.

Zesting and juicing the lemon would be a better idea but, that would be more work. I bought a cheap bag of lemons the other day. I'm going to throw one in the freezer.

Same here - a bag of 8/9 was about the same price as 3 individually. I stuck 2 in the freezer - we'll see.

Apparently they freeze much better if they are sliced or quartered first......

I usually zest the lemon first, put the zest into aluminum foil and then into a zip lock freezer bag. I freeze the juice in an ice cube tray and once the cubes are frozen, combine them in a zip lock freezer bag. I do the same with limes and oranges.

It's more work on the front end but when I want to use any, I can just pluck what I need out of the freezer.

My father in law got me started on this awhile back. We quarter them, then freeze them. Easy to pull out and use in recipes or to flavor water.

I feel freezing zests or limes makes more bitter and less sour flavor.
Well, I agree with jlawrence01. You should juice it before freezing.
