I can't seem to help myself from buying peaches and nectarines each time I go grocery shopping. They all seem to ripen at once, and I'm tired of throwing out fruit. Can someone suggest a usage besides pies, crisps, etc? We have no dessert eaters at home, just fruit lovers.
Cut up and freeze for smoothies. Add to yougart. I make a fruit/cornmeal/yougart muffins (recipe is on allrecipesDOTcom)
I made a resolution a couple years ago to quit throwing out so much food. And then made a list of what we have throw out in the past and ideas for using them up....
milk - tapicoa pudding in the crock pot
veggies - soups and stews (base of 1/2 V8 juice and 1/2 broth with cooked pasta). Also learn how to make a potpie or two
bread - croutons...
you get the idea...
Also - I buy ALOT of fruit. I prepare it (cut up in bite size pieces, wash it etc...) Put it right where the husband can see it when he opens the frig. I use the fruit/veggie keeper section for sodas , sealed cheese, etc... I found that when it gets pushed to the bin/drawer I don't find it again tl it's time to clean out the frige
I agree about flash freezing it. That way you can enjoy it when the fruit is not in season. It isn't hard to do...and so worth it. I also use the frozen fruit for smoothies along with freezing yogurt cubes as I can't seem to go through a tub fast enough. Plus, I think the smoothies are better without using ice cubes so the frozen stuff is a good substitute.
What I do, because we buy a lot of fruit this time of year... I buy the fruit in ripen stages. I'll buy ripe bananas but I'll buy really green bananas, too. I'll buy almost soft plums, peaches & nectarines, but I'll also buy them when they are still a bit hard.
Honey dew has a waxy feel to it when not ripe. When it starts to turn whiteish-yellowish or when it loses that waxy feel, it's ripe.
Cantaloupe has very fragrant smell at the end of the melon where it is picked off the vine. That means it's ripe.
We love bing cherries. I freeze those and I freeze grapes.

I don't. Because it doesn't really stay crisp once it has thawed. But, if you like your fruit mushy then go for it. The vegetables we freeze get cooked as well.

You can make juices, popsickles, sauces, etc. The possibilities are endless. There are times where we have just experimented and created our own glazes when we barbecue, or roast anything. I never thought it would be so much fun and I don't really do that much of it. I need to get used to creating purees next!
The grapes & cherries are great frozen. Tastes great on a hot summer day, or anytime.
