I went to Popeyes to order some food and asked for some sweet hot sauce which is tasty. I get home and was shocked when I looked at the receipt... they had charged me $2 extra for the sauce!!!!! I was upset because they never told me and since it was a large order thought they should include it for free.
I used to go there every week but haven't gone back since, purely on principle. So penny pinching on the sauce probably cost them thousands of dollars. Smart business move.. NOT!
The restaurant industry is very cost-sensitive, especially food costs. You'd probably be very surprised at the low profit margin restaurants operate within. Throw-in competition and the restaurants are really operating on a thin margin.
This is why pizzas you purchase today aren't nearly as tasty as they were twenty years ago (mom and pop shops excluded).
I had lunch at KFC today and they were happy to give me what I wanted with my chicken tenders - one mustard and one bbq.
And the food was free too (but I had to buy a drink) for me filling out a survey online. The staff at the location in the city I live in gives excellent customer service.
I always ask the costs,,,because im thinking they are being trained to suggestive up-sell and if I agree,,,they wont volunteer the cost,,
the chains restaurants are terrible,,,,
"is it free"?? is now my favorite response,,,then after the second "no" they don't try anymore
I went to a chain steak house here in Texas and the waitress asked if we wanted cracked black pepper on our steaks. Imagine my surprise when the bill came and there was a $2.99 each (3 of us) charge for the same stuff sitting on my table. I complained and told them I could have gone next door to the grocery store and bought a whole container of pepper for less than $9! They removed the charge, but now I am like you, just because they offer doesn't mean it's free!
I don't mind being charged for the sauce if I get extra. But I was a bit annoyed at the staff at Zaxby's. I don't like ranch and the kids don't like the zesty sauce that comes with our meals. I asked for another type. They gave us the unwanted tubs of sauces plus charged us for the 'extras'. The next time I specified that we didn't want them as extra but as replacements. They did the same thing again. I haven't gone back and don't know if I will. It's a piddly thing but annoying! At least my waistline will thank me.
I don't necessarily mind paying extra for extra sauce (or whatever) but I want the opportunity to decide that for myself. I actually like that McDonalds makes it clear that you get 1 container of sauce and they will charge you if you want another one. Of course, they don't give you a credit if you don't want any at all! lol! (my son likes the nuggets but doesn't use any sauce)

That's incredible - charging extra for the ground pepper. Which chain restaurant is this? Steak is already high profit and usually priced higher on the menu so that is petty. I wouldn't go to a restaurant that nickels and dimes hoping customers wouldn't notice.
