I'm from Oklahoma (60 years) and moved to western Washington two years ago. We used to buy wonderful ham salad at the Crescent Market in Oklahoma City. I looked for it out here and got responses like "Uh, HAM salad? Never heard of it." Someone from the south said she knew what it was but had never seen in up here. A friend said she'd heard of ham salad sandwiches but not ham salad.
A couple of national chains - Wal-Mart and Honeybaked Ham - sell it here but I just make my own now. It's basically ham, mayo and pickles with whatever additions you want. I heard that market in OKC is closing in a couple years - - gotta get back for my ham salad fix.
The first time I heard of ham salad was in Nigel Slater's book Toast: The Story of a Boy's Hunger. They seemed to eat ham salad a lot and I wondered what the heck it was!
It sounds exactly like tuna or chicken salad, don't know why that should surprise me!
My mom always made/makes it. She uses leftover ham, puts it through a hand crank grinder,( she ''doesnt beleive in'' fancy food processors) and mayo,celery, pickle-illy (sweet pickle relish). I have to say, its really good on bread/rolls.
We had this a ton in the midwest. My mother always made with the leftover ham. I have to say I am not a fan. Personally I really hate the stuff, but it was always a big hit with the rest of my family.
My mom calls that monkey meat, or minced meat. I don't care for it, because I don't like relish - but she loves it. It is actually good for finger sandwiches at parties, along side tuna, chicken salad and egg salad.
I make ham salad and serve with crackers all the time; I throw everything in the food processor and whirl away. I am a TN Native but lived in PA for 11 years; ham salad is very popular there. The deli's in the grocery stores carry it. I love it.
I must be one of those that has led a sheltered life, I've never heard of ham salad before.
It sounds yummy though.
