oday the National Hot Dog and Sausage Council launched a bracket to determine the Official Hot Dog Condiment Champion. Their bracket separates wet and dry condiments, but in the end there will only be one winner of these 16 competitors: sauerkraut, ketchup, mustard, cole slaw, chili, BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, onions, cheese, tomatoes, sweet peppers, hot peppers, bacon, pickles and pulled pork.
What should be on a dog is whatever you like on a dog. It's inane to think that some condiments are correct and some aren't.
I like chopped white raw onions and Dijon mustard and nothing else on my dogs... but I cannot delude myself into thinking my subjective preferences are somehow right and that other ways are wrong.
Ketchup is the ONLY thing I ever put on hot dogs, or ever will put on them. And if the National Hot Dog Council doesn't like it . . . well, they can have my ketchup when they pry it out of my cold, dead hands.
Hmm, I disagree with the National Hotdog and Sausage council.
While my favorite way to have a hotdog is grilled on a bun with spicy mustard and onions, there are times when I like to put ketchup, mustard and relish on my dog.
Live and let live when it comes to hotdogs I say. :-)
I won't physical stop somebody from putting ketchup on a hot dog, but it's a big no. Mustard, raw onions, and celery salt...that's it. It doesn't need to be I almost forgot...the hot dog has to be all-beef and boiled.

My usual condiment for a hot dog is mustard and relish but sometimes I do the mustard and sauerkraut and sometimes I put all three. My favorite way is the way we used to get them in the pushcarts in NYC: Sabretts with the cooked onions in a tomato type base.
If it is my hotdog I can put whatever I want on it. I happen to like ketchup. So far no hotdog police have tried to put a stop to the practice.
