That's a weird thing I always heard about Chicago, that some people get mad when someone wants ketchup on a hot dog and that a lot of hot dog places don't even carry ketchup. Is this true in your experience?

not so much being angry, more like wondering why someone would go to a dermatologist and have a wart added to their face...who does that?!

I heard there is a fancy/famous hot dog place that will kick you out if you ask for ketchup.

Kind of a joke, but some like to run with it. I sometimes put ketchup on a hot dog if it's a plain dog from like costco. However, a chicago dog is a special thing so no ketchup on that!

definitely, a GOOD dog, like a Vienna Beef does not need ketchup. I wouldn't eat a mediocre hot dog. I was at my brother's once near lunch time and my sister in law offered me a hot dog. It was Oscar Mayer I think. It was disgusting. You'd need ketchup to drown out the bad taste.

I've always thought Ketchup on hotdogs was gross, long before I had even visited Chicago, let alone moved here. It's not a Chicago thing to me, it's a basic taste thing. Some flavors go together and some don't. Ketchup really only goes on things like fries, onion rings, or tots, unless you're a 5-year-old.

My friend was visiting last weekend from NYC - went and got a Chicago dog but I forgot to tell him about the ketchup thing. So this place actually gives you ketchup packets - I look back and he put some on. I had to tell him to take it off because it'll ruin the flavor. hahaha. He licked it off. Pretty funny.

I put ketchup on my hotdogs...if I make them at home. Never occurred to me to put ketchup on a Chicago dog. Doesn't need it. I wouldn't make fun of anyone for doing it, though.

Why not put maple syrup on a deep dish slice or chocolate sauce on an Italian Beef? If your idea of a party is putting sugary condiments on your savory grownup foods just to get a reaction from people, might as well go hog wild with it.
