Back when the name “Starbuck” brought to mind the name of a character in Moby Dick or Battlestar Gallactica, or the group that recorded “Moonlight Feels Right”, who liked mountain-grown arabica coffee and knew where to get it?

Starbucks is gourmet?

I've been grinding my own beans since the early 80s if that is what you are asking.

Earlier, anyone living in close proximity to a large, metropolitan city probably had access to beans that weren't mainstream.

Back in the 70s, yup.

And Staryux always tastes like a forest fire.

The worst coffee I ever bought was Starbucks French Roast. It tasted like charcoal.

People can complain about Starbucks, but the reason that there is more of a coffee culture in the US and there are so many local roasters is directly correlated to Starbucks. Otherwise people would still be enjoying their Sanka and Folgers crystals.

I guess everyone has a different idea about gourmet. I think of gourmet as Kona coffee, or other types from places other than islands and we have been drinking it for years. Do I really see a huge difference? Notpe and I do love flavored coffee, but any kind will work. I just do not particularly see all the hype about Starbucks, except for the bucks part.

They did introduce more people to coffee beyond the canned stuff. Would Wal Mart carry Sam’s Choice organic arabica coffee if it weren’t for Starbucks?

In my part of the US, Community Coffee was considered the best coffee. It may still be.
