A good substitute is to buy a can of Bird's Custard Powder, most grocers and British food stores have it, as well as Amazon. Just mix with milk and bring to a boil,. I used it on Christmas to make a Trifle for dessert.

I've never heard of it either.

We are going on a Sunset Cruise/whale watch this afternoon with friends from Louisiana. I am going to ask if they know of it.

Interesting; thank you! I may look for that, having failed to get my fix this season.

I've heard of custard but never heard of drinking it. I made custard a few weeks ago, baked in the oven. I also make it on the stove top but you have to stir constantly. I LOVE custard. I LOVE eggnog. Baked custard was what my mother always gave us when we were sick in bed so I guess it's a real comfort food for me.

There have been dairy shortages and there was definitely a cream shortage. Local stores had eggnog, but not in the huge amounts of past years. It's possible that there was not enough cream available or that the price was so high that the manufacturers felt the public wouldn't pay the price.

Apparently there was some, because I finally found the shelf label below the empty shelf. Maybe it's growing in popularity and sold out earlier than the eggnog did.
