Most years I've seen tons of this leftover after the holidays, but I haven't found a single half gallon this entire season. I finally found the shelf label where some USED to be (so I assume at least one store had some at one time), but - although there's still plenty of eggnog - boiled custard is nowhere to be found. Do you like and drink this at Christmas and New Year's, and have you been able to locate some? If not, I wonder why???

Publix has Southern Boiled Custard as well as egg nog.

I like both but prefer custard. Buy some every year.

At Publix yesterday there were a few cartons on the shelf.

What is the difference? I have only had eggnog.

If I recall correctly, it tastes like a vanilla milkshake or melted vanilla ice cream, but smoother and creamier; most people drink it warm. Although I bought it by default the first time (no eggnog), I was really disappointed not to find it this year! Must remember to shop early.

I'd never heard of it before this moment, but eggnog is a custard, but it relies heavily on nutmeg and other spices for it's flavor, so my guess for the boiled custard is that it doesn't have the nutmeg and spices to flavor it.

That's the main difference. Boiled custard has no spices other than vanilla.

Depending how you make it, if you add whipped egg whites it tends to be a bit frothier/fluffier.

I found it at Publix. They usually start selling it early Dec through early January, but it can be hit or miss if they have it on any given day.

Not sure if they simply don't keep the space stocked or low demand for it so they don't order a lot.

If you like whiskey in your drink you might find something similar at your liquor store. My husband picked up a bottle labeled egg nog with whiskey. It was boiled custard instead so pretty good. Wish I had noted the brand.
