My companion and I agree that none of the things on your list qualify as a sandwich.

Of the options listed, the only one I might consider a sandwich is the bagel. To me a sandwich is two (or more) pieces/slices of bread with a filling in between. Not wrapped, and not a tortilla.

Sandwich
/ˈsanˌ(d)wiCH/
noun

Definition: an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.

The answer is self explanatory.

Obviously, many sandwichs are made with a bread roll rather than two individual slices, but the point remains. Deep fried, breaded items or deep fried flour items are not "sandwiches".

A sandwich can be pan fried (grilled cheese), or can be deep fried (Monte Cristo), but requires a base of bread, not a tortilla or a flour pocket.

It is debatable if a bagel constitutes bread for the purpose of being called a sandwich. It is possible. But then is a donut cut in half considered bread for sandwhich purposes? Doubt it.

Per Igor's definition (with which I agree)...

A hamburger in a hamburger bun is a sandwich, but a hot dog in a hot dog bun is not a sandwich.

A sandwich is indeed defined as an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with a filling between them, eaten as a light meal. So anything that falls in to this category is a Sandwich.

In relation to your choices a Bagel with a top and bottom as opposed to an open bagel would be a type of sandwich, as it could be considered to be bread, however I am not sure about most of the other items in your poll including those made from pastry rather than bread, which I would not categorise as being a sandwich.

As for John Montagu the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who the Sandwich is named after, he led a rather controversial life and was a member of the original Hellfire Club back in the 18th century, and they would meet at the Hellfire Caves situated above the village of West Wycombe, at the southern edge of the Chiltern Hills near High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, Southeast England.

Under the auspices of their motto, Fais ce que to voudras (Do what thou wilt), the club was accused of engaging in acts that were distinctly pagan. Mock sacrilegious rituals, wild drinking and banqueting, and perverted sex parties/orgies were common activities for the club.

The club’s library reportedly had the largest collection of pornography in England at the time, and the club was linked to black masses and Satanic worship.

I hope I haven't put you off your Sandwiches, then again perhaps the Sandwich itself is the work of the devil or demonic.

Robert Vansittart, a judge who was friends with Samuel Johnson (creator of one of the most influential English dictionaries).

British politician John Wilkes, a distant relative of John Wilkes Booth (Abraham Lincoln’s assassin) and namesake of the Wilkes-Barre region in Pennsylvania, was a suspected member.

Benjamin Franklin may have been a member. He attended several meetings in 1758, and had an entire cave named after him.

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu, perhaps most famous for introducing smallpox inoculation to the Western world after learning about it while traveling the Ottoman Empire, was also a guest of the club.

Gotta ask, sorry.... if my hot dog bun breaks apart when I pick it up (almost always!), is it now a sandwich?

Samosas and empanadas are in the pastry category.

Bagels are in the sandwich category
