this has been bugging me for a while, but there's this fruit I remember eating in Haiti over a decade ago when I last went there, though I seen them sold in Caribbean stores the States (at least in Boston). they're small and green, maybe a bit bigger than grapes. you peel off the green skin and eat the fruit inside (which, if I'm remembering correctly, looks like peeled green grapes. I think). anyone have any clue what's this fruit is called? I find myself suddenly craving them, whatever they were!

IDK, looking at the wiki page, these fruits are orange; the ones I'm looking for are green when ripe. but it does seem close, maybe related.

thanks anyways

Wish I could remember, but I know what you mean, they are awesome tasting! They grow in Central America as well.

Did they have a white seed inside? Do you mean guinneps/gineps/guineps? I love them, but they don't really look like grapes, so you may have eaten something else. I loved eating these as a kid.

ooh, you know what, I think those may be it! haven't had them in a while, so I may have gotten some details mixed up (for some reason, I remember the inside resembling a peeled grape in either texture or color)

now I just have to track these down in Chicago. in winter!

yup, these are it!

thanks!

My mom used to buy these when I was younger. They sold them all over NYC in the summer time.

They're called genips in my part of the Caribbean - I have a huge tree in the yard. They flower around May/June and the fruit is ready to pick in August. They grow in clusters like grapes, have a thick outer skin which you crack with your teeth then pop the interior nut into your mouth and suck off the pith which surrounds it. You can see a picture of the genips in the "Feline Friends Gallery" in the gallery at the website Toad and Tart - Homepage. Happy geniping!
