Wow summer is almost over and I bought 2 or 3 cantaloupes the whole season and they weren't very good. Every year I can't wait for summer because I love a good sweet cantaloupe. But this year there just haven't been many at the store. Is this happening anywhere else? I miss cantaloupe.
I was just thinking that I've had very few good ones too...I usually buy about 2/3 a week...it seems like I've been throwing alot away after I cut them and find half isn't good, or they don't have a nice texture.
Forestburg SD. Muskmelon/cantelope are awesome....producers have been picking "numbers" for about a week. Should be picking pick up loads, next week. Watermelon are ripening slowly....not many "numbers," yet....
*numbers = countlike we picked our 1sr 100 today. or we've picked 300 total. when they hit pickup loads, they quite the "number'' deal.
They are plentiful here in NC although it's a 50/50 chance on the quality it seems. We've had some of the best and some not so good! I haven't seen a store that doesn't have them here. Personally I like the ones from the Farmers Market. They are vine ripened and seem to be the best!
They seem plentiful in East Tennessee. The prices are a bit higher priced than past years. The spouse said that they don't seem to be as tasty this year. We have had a lot of rain this year; perhaps this had a bearing. Our tomatoes got blight from too much rain.
Yes, Beretta.....Melons are sweeter, in a "hot" year. Cantalope/muskmelon will have a firmer meat, in a dry year. When you cut them open, and the juice runs all over the counter, it normally means the producer over irrigated, or the field had a lot of rain.
*Another note. After working for melon growers, in our area, for 15 years. A bland tasting melon, can be a sign, that the soil is "worn out". Time to rotate the crops!
Neat photos. Looks the same as the cantaloupe fields in Eastern Shore Maryland and Delaware
