I stay away from the generic brand mayo's and chocolate chip, INSIST on my bounty paper towels and Scoot tissue... everything else is open.

Default brand name, chain, franchise vs. private store

When you go out and want to have a meal/dessert, do you look for the " big name",chain/franchise eateries, or, for those privately owned ones that offer comparable items, quality and prices, in addition to fresh, organic, no-added sugar, fat free items?

thanks in advance for posting your views.

i look for whichever one provides me with the best value. sometimes that is a chain and sometimes it isnt. being a chain or an indepently owned location doesnt impact my decision.

I am not a chain restaurant person. I like local diners and restaurants. The only time we eat in chain restaurants is if we are traveling on I-95 since we don't want to take the time to get off of the interstate and take our chances in some of the small towns (we did that once and could not find one local restaurant that was open--what a shame). We are usually in too much of a hurry to get where we are going.

Don't go out to eat much, but when we do the wife and kids like to go to the same place and get the same thing, always at a chain rest. I just drive and try to keep peace. It is typically Applebee's, Red Lobster, or Olive Garden.

Then there is the dreaded subway and ff burger joints. Easy diet plan by not eating there.

sorry, hit the button by mistake before finishing my comment. so the " big guys" should not scare the " small guys" probably as long as the small guys are value, budget, kids friendly. Capt. Cave Man, I've been there and done that, but now that my kids are adults, we get to enjoy the best in town, wherever it is.

Location, Location, Location. If I want to open a burger joint, I want to have it right next to the busiest, best place in town to get a burger.

Small guys have a disadvantage due to economies of scale, BUT they have the advantage of some thing special/unique that you can't find at any other restaurant. Good or bad, it's an experience.
