Fort Lauderdale is nice if you

1.) Don't have to send your kids to Public school
2.) Have high income employment
3.) Live EAST of US-1 (away from Sunrise Blvd/ N.W. 6th st.)
4.) Can afford very high property tax/insurance rates
5.) WANT to take advantage of the beach

How about that vast area west of Univeristy Drive known as Coral Springs, Weston, Davie, Cooper City, Pembroke Pines, Miramar, and Parkland.
2.) Have high income employment
Agree. Don't move here on less than 60 grand, or less than 75 with kids
3.) Live EAST of US-1 (away from Sunrise Blvd/ N.W. 6th st.)
See #1
4.) Can afford very high property tax/insurance rates
Agree

Truthfully I haven't been to the beach in a month or so. I don't live east of US1 and it's pretty nice here.

If we are talking about the Fort Lauderdale city limits, than I 100 percent agree.

Well I consider myself none of those things so maybe I'll like it than...Although I am having difficultly in setting up interviews with companies.. I think they are dismissing my resume cause I am out of state. Everybody loves to hate Scottsdale (where I live now) But its filled with closed minded and pretenious people sort of has a rep for it (check out all the comments on the Arizona forum). I'm expecting Fort Lauderdale to be different

Having been to Scottsdale it reminds me a lot of....a desert version of Boca Raton in a few ways. The thing about Fort Lauderdale and it's surrounding cities is that there isn't really one "mentality" but so many different kinds of people from so many different places actually kind of melting together and get along. People here aren't the warmest or the friendliest, but they are pretty down to earth and making friendships isn't hard. You WILL see people speaking different languages than you, and if you fear that I would not recommend Florida in general People tend to be less self insular down here than a lot of "transient" cities, so that helps out a lot. All and all, there is a lot of good and a lot of bad here, and those five factors listed above are very true, not to mention the pay to cost of living ratio here is weak...job competition is fierce in many fields. I wouldn't recommend moving here without a job rounded up, and without at least 900 a month to spend on renting a 1 bedroom, but for a young professional, Fort Lauderdale can be a pretty fun place to live.

I agree with Compelled to reply (the last posting) Fort Lauderdale is a popular place to hate, nice weather but in general it is hard to find employement, housing is expensive and people are in general mean. Good luck but if I were you I consider another state.

Have you ever been to Scottsdale? I can certainly attest to the latter two, but the former? I don't think so! Plus how can those three conditions possibly coexist? Superficial yet trashy? Doesn't make any sense!

Perhaps you were hanging with the wrong crowd? . Where in Lauderdale did you live anyhow? Parts of this area can certainly fit that description, but a lot more parts of Tampa, Orlando, Miami, Atlanta, Chicago, LA, Detroit, Philly, Cincinatti, and Dallas fit this description from my experience. Although any city can if you find yourself locating in the wrong area and associating with the wrong people.
