My wife and I are considering a house in Weston/Parkland area. One of our primary concerns is bugs...she can't stand them and is worried we will be overrun by them living so close to the Everglades. Can any residents comment on the bug situation in this area? Her biggest fear is snakes, and if she ever saw one on our property we would probably move. Are snake sightings common in the area? Is the bug situation in West Broward much different than living on the East Coast near the beach?

Thank you!

There will be bugs and snakes and other creepy crawlies. Get a good exterminator. Get a couple of cats. Embrace the lizards.

The further west you go, the more wildlife you will experience. Lizards will be very common on your house, geckos, anoles, they are harmless and work like natural pest control but they leave droppings all over the place. They do get inside occasionally, I catch them and put them back outside. Snakes, I see them once and a while, not too often though, depends where you live.

If your wife can't stand bugs, I would rethink moving to Florida period. Even with good pest control they get in the house.

Also don't forget we have Iguanas down here too.

Palmetto Bugs! Sounds much nicer like maybe they have long eyelashes they bat at you... even if they are flying cockroaches.

It's really not as bad as you think. I recommend finding a home with a screened enclosure for the patio and/or pool area, which makes it more pleasant and enjoyable to sit outside. Hire a monthly pest control service.
Snakes aren't that common unless you have a large yard, and don't mow it frequently. Even so, the varieties of snakes around are mostly harmless.

Lots of lizards hanging around walls, so get ready (They're harmless though). You might run into a small snake or two. Many houses in Weston have ant problems. I haven't encountered, or heard of, any roaches yet. Also a lot of dragonflies, especially in the more wooded areas. An alligator has been spotted in one of the Weston lakes, but it hasn't done anything to anyone so far.
Late at night and up until the wee morning hours, raccoons and possums (But I don't know if you would consider them "creepy crawlies")
