Hi all -- my husband and I relcoated to South Florida 2 years ago from the northeast and are currently renting in East Fort Lauderdale (Bal Harbor). Our lease is coming due and we are looking to purchase a home in the near future. Our budget is $500,000. We are a young (early 30s), professional (lawyer and physician) couple with no kids, but a 50 lb. dog. We are looking for a single family home. Cookie cutter is fine, but there needs to be some space between houses. The biggest hang up is that I work in Plantation and my husband works in Aventura. His commute is brutal, even just from Biscayne to 95. He often just takes Federal all the way home.

We are looking for somewhere with similarly situated people in a nice neighborhood where we can make some friends, but that does not put too much of a drain on his commute. We do not necessarily need a gated community, but wouldn't be against it. We are okay with cookie cutter homes, as long as there is some space between houses.

We have looked in West Lake Village in Hollywood and while it seemed like a nice subdivision, the houses are wayyy too close together. We liked the other houses in Hollywood Lakes but most are out of budget or the size of a postage stamp. We aren't sure about Hollywood Hills; seems a little unkempt. We have also looked in Davie (I liked Forest Ridge), Plantation, and Cooper City, but fear that this will make his commute pretty long.

Does anyone have any suggestions for where to look that might be a happy medium? I have already suggested that my husband quit his job to make this easier, but that didn't go over so well

Thank you in advance!

Jacaranda lakes, Westport and hawks ridge(sorry if the last name is not accurate, I am drawing a blank) are nice communities in Plantation. The commute might be more manageable taking the turnpike and 595. Hawks ridge is right off 595 at Nob Hill. The other 2 about 10-15 minutes to 595 or the turnpike or 75.

Hawks Landings is a nice area but I believe the homes start out way over 500k, I just looked online and the least expensive is $750,000.
Forest Ridge I agree is nice, in Cooper City there is Monterra but most single family homes go for more than 500k, I see a few nice looking ones online with asking prices between 550k and 585k.

You might like Harmony Lakes Estates Davie, I see one 4/2.5 home online in there right now for 455k

Also Hawks Landing has very high monthly maintenance fees (like $2,500 per month) AND a yearly membership fee on top of that ($3,900)

Maybe find a place in Fort Lauderdale that is closer to Aventura commute-wise.

You could shave off 20 min during rush hour if you are better situated in Fort Lauderdale in relation to I-95. A place in Croissant Park maybe?

I am so glad I found you again. I found 13 opportunities for you. There are some nice little niches and some areas have bigger lot's even in the communities that have little lot's. We live in a community with average 4450 lot size but because of how we are situated, we have 7800 lot size. Call me 954-483-3439.

Who is willing to take the commute?

Safe and in that budget means east of Fed Hwy or West of the Turnpike, for the most part.
